Tractor
Yanmar 1700
I have 4 acres. About half cleared and the other half had lots of pines standing until hurricane Michael came though, now they are all on the ground. Current tasks for the tractor would be to move enough dirt from the front to the back to fill in a pool and then help with moving all the downed trees. Considering one of the 4" or 6" PTO wood chippers to chip the branches and then get forks to put on the loader bucket to move the larger part of the trees to get them stacked in a more orderly manner.

I have found a Kubota L2900 with disc, root rake, bucket, forks quick connect front and back spare tire 4wd 2027 hours has glide shift transmission. The guy is asking $10K. I know nothing about tractors. Does that price sound reasonable? Due to past experience with an older Kubota and the unavailability of parts, is there any way to determine the year of manufacture and a way to determine parts availability of this tractor?

Tractordata.com says that the L2900 was manufactured from 1994-1999. I don' have any idea of parts availability.

We had the same tractor it was a warhorse for its size With 10K down at the Bota dealer you could probably by a new one (compact) and find or buy new inmplements and owe who knows $12k ?
I think finding sheet metal parts for the L2900 would be difficult . Whats the tractor look like has it slept indoors all its life ? What kind of implements are they name brand or big box store stuff ? Maybe you can post some pics. Remember its purt near 20 years old . Without seeing it I'd say $8500 -$9k . How long has it been for sale ? Whenever I make a major purchase i always ask myself if i had to sell it in 6 months could or would i be able to break even and get my money back ? Just my thoughts .

Don't know much about the tractor. It was posted for sale this morning. Waiting on a reply with the contact information for the owner. $10K is a whole lot different than $22K. Unless something is going to generate income I am not big on going into debt (Proverbs 22:7 ).

I agree, this is another reason I am inclined to stay away from new. I have a buddy that purchased a New tractor in Late October for storm cleanup ($42,000) now has decided he needs a bigger one and is going to take a beating on either a trade or selling it outright.

$10K must have been a good deal. It did not last a day.

Tasks for the tractor would be moving dirt from the front to the back to fill in a pool and then help with moving the downed trees.

Considering one of the 4" or 6" PTO wood chippers to chip the branches and then get forks to put on the loader bucket to move the larger part of the trees to get them stacked in a more orderly manner.

First plan on purchasing a chainsaw and numerous spare/sharp saw chains. I suggest a Stihl MS 231 with an 18" bar if the Pines are no greater than 30" in diameter. If Pines are larger you will need a Stihl MS 231 and a Stihl MS 431 with a 25" bar.

I owned a 6" best in category Wallenstein PTO powered chipper. Too much time consuming sharpening and blade adjustment for the volume you contemplate. Burning is the answer. Burn in the pool, fill afterward.

L2900 pretty light but could accomplish what you wish if operator prudent and willing to cut tree trunks into 4' lengths, if wide diameter. L2900 certainly ample for routine landscaping tasks on four acres.

Chainsaw time is hazardous time.

I have 4 acres. I know nothing about tractors.

The most efficient way to shop for tractors is to identify potential tractor applications first, then determine bare tractor weight necessary to safely accomplish your applications.

The fundamental importance of TRACTOR WEIGHT eludes many tractor shoppers. Heavier tractor weight is more important for most tractor applications than increased tractor horsepower. Bare tractor weight is a tractor specification easily found in sales brochures and web sites, readily comparable across tractor brands and tractor models, new and used.

Shop your weight range within tractor brands. Budget will eliminate some choices. Collect a dealer brochure for each tractor model in your weight range. I spreadsheet tractor and implement specs, often a revealing exercise. I have a column for cost per pound.

I have a buddy that purchased a new tractor in late October for storm cleanup ($42,000). He decided he needs a bigger //HEAVIER// tractor and is going to take a beating on either a trade or selling it outright.

Selling a used tractor is easy. Selling multiple light implements in order to buy heavier, wider implements for a new, heavier tractor requires a lot of time. Depreciation on implements is generally greater than depreciation on a tractor.

A quality dealer, reasonably close, available for coaching, is important for tractor neophytes. Most new tractors are delivered with a glitch or two requiring correction. My Kubota dealer is six miles away. I feel my local dealer continues to add value to my equipment after seven years. Dealer proximity is less important for those experienced with tractors, qualified to perform their own maintenance.

Kubota L2900 = 2,700 pounds, bare tractor weight. Loader lift when new = 1,058 pounds.
