I notice it's engine is direct injection instead of the usual indirect injection. Made me wonder if it is made in another country like Thailand. Anyone look and see where the engine is made? With the DT (gear) tractor you still have to clutch to shift the shuttle forward/reverse?

Kubota offers engines that are both direct and indirect. Kubota makes their own engines and as far as I know they are manufactured in Japan.

Yes the shuttle f/r will require the clutch.

The 2501, like my 3301 is a Kubota engine from Japan. I believe it's even the same engine, AFAIK, just tuned down. Kubota is one of the largest equipment engine manufacturers out there, and quite a bit of equipment painted other colors still have orange engines. The direct injection is part of the Tier-IV final emissions compliance, though I believe the 2501 does squeak by without the DPF.

The 2501 and 3301 use different engines, 1.7L mech inj. In the 2501 and a 1.8L electronic injected in the 3301 and 3901.

The 2501 is below the HP threshold for the stricter tier 4 and doesn't require a DPF. The HP drop is done by rating/limiting the engine output at 2200rpm instead of the more common 26-2800 for that engine.
The tractor itself is made in Japan, just remembered what the I'd tag says.

How much more do you know about these engines? As in are you practically aware of how they actually accomplish these detune drops? Or just that it's done? Useful information if you have it...

The majority of the power reduction is through the reduced rated engine speed, the rest is slight changes to fuel/timing. There is also the possibility of of using gross continuous power instead of gross intermittent but I haven't been able to confirm that.

If you purchase the optional FEL or Backhoe each is manufactured in Kubota plants in Georgia.

Before committing to an L2501 clutch/gear, read this cautionary T-B-N thread: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/...523-warning-those-considering-gear-drive.html

Agreed.

The gear driven L2501 has transmission driven PTO including overrunning clutch. It does not have live or independent PTO.

Aside from the dual range, this is essentially the same as a Ford 8N (without optional Sherman combination) and will require compromises from one accustomed to a HST or gear drive transmission with live or independent PTO.
