Anyone seen this? There are final drives out by the rear wheels. I've seen a couple of L245DT's but not with these. Are these for something like an airport tow tractor or something? Its 4WD so the ratios would all be different.

I used to own one of these and that's how my rear axles were, there were several Kubota models that I know of that used this final drive arrangement so yours is nothing out of the ordinary, although it looks a little odd with those wheels fully extended for stability.

I also have a 1982 L245DT that I puchased last summer and I am wondering what you mean by "final drives".?

Randy,
look at my attachment. Maybe you can make out what I would call "final drives" like a dozer has. My friend has a L245DT and his does not have these. That would mean to me that all the diff ratio's would have to be different than a conventional Ag tractor thus making parts hard to get. I'm thinking of buying a used L245DT and it has these. Thats why my questions. If they posed problems,,,, I'd rather avoid this unit.
PS How do you like your 245 so far Randy?

HI and Merry Christmas, I used to have one like that, had problems with a rear axle ball bearing going out a couple of times, replaced it with a heavier duty bearing and never had anymore problems. Real good little tractor other than that.

I think many of the early L's have this setup - but with the wheels and fenders set in close it doesn't show up as much. The steel final drives were used up to the L355 and they held up fine - I had a L345 and I didn't baby it - often had a 100 gallon tank bouncing along on the 3-pt arms. That tractor had 13.6x28 rear rubber too so the final drives got yanked around a lot. Had no problems at all. Not even any leaks.

When you think about it, designing a tractor this way makes sense. All the biggest torque loads are kept at the end of the power stream at the wheels. By having a "final drive" gear set the torques in the main transmission are kept much lower - so the parts can be smaller (and less expensive to make). Hope this is useful.

My '82 L245DT is working fine so far, See your looking for 1 also? I just acquired mine last summer, it needs a little TLC, but should do just fine for what I am doing with it. Good Luck! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
