Kubota L245 Hydraulic Transmission Fluid Replace

Hey there all.

I just picked up a Kubota L245 2WD with a Bush Hog 1846QT FEL. I need to change the hydraulic Trans Fluid, but not sure where to put the fluid in or how to know when it's full. There is an adapter where the filler cap is, that the hydraulic return hose is connected to. Is there another place to add the fluid? When pulling the filter screen out, does that drain out all the fluid, or is there a plug on the underside as well? I've also noticed that several Kubota models also have a drain plug on each gear box for the rear wheels. I don't see a plug there, but wanted to double check.

Hey there 5030, thanks for the tip. I bought the operation and maintenance manuals. Very helpful, but not 100% clear.

There are 2 plugs on the underside of the transmission, and the screen. That'll drain everything that's not in the pump and lines.

The filler plug has to be removed to put fluid into the transmission. Mine just has an adapter on it for the FEL, so I had to remove it.
Mine has a filler "plug" instead of a window, so I had to fill till it ran out the plug. I ran it a minute or 2, worked the FEL, then checked and topped it off.

I used standard Hydraulic/Transmission fluid, I got mine at Tractor Supply for $45 for 5gal.

as far as the "gear box",,, that's the Rear Axle Case. It appears to have gear oil in it, I'm guessing 80SAE. There are 2 plugs on the inside of it. 1 upper, 1 lower. I'm going to "AssUme" the lower one is the drain, and the upper one is the fill (till it overflows) plug. I have to replace the seals (Kubota Part Number 32448-99140) on both sides. I'm going to jack it up, block it, and remove the wheels, just for the weight. Anyone know the Rear Axle Case Oil Capacity?

I don't know anything about your specific tractor but sometimes tractors use the same oil for the transmission and rear axle. Maybe the older ones are less common but mine is hydraulic oil for everything. roughly 10 gallons of it.

Hey there James,, Yea, I've bean doing a lot of looking and reading different blogs and post, and it seams a lot use the fluid. I thought mine did as well, but when I pulled the plug to drain, what I expected to be the same hyro/trans fluid, it was a different color and texture then what cam out of the transmission. So now I'm not sure...

So I got a hold of the folks at Messick's and got some great info. They confirmed the rear axle cases get fluid from the hydraulic reservoir, and to pull the 2 lower plugs on the inside of the axle cases to drain the fluid that's in there. They also suggested I use a good quality UDT or even a Super UDT2 fluid. Tractor Supply caries a 5 gal bucket for $59.95. I'll probably get that.

Finally finished replacing the hydraulic/transmission fluid!! The Kubota L245F (2WD) uses 1 fluid for everything and it took about 7 gallons. Mine had 2 plugs by the clutch, a recessed one (the left one) and a "normal" looking one (the right one). The one on the right is the correct on to use as the fluid level indicator.
