I'm in the market for a used tractor and bush hog.
I found an old L1500 with 42" bush hog and scraper.

The need I'm trying to meet with this tractor is at my hunting land.
I have a 35 acre hunting tract with about 3 acres cleared.
One acre is a grass lawn.
The other 2 are fields that I mostly plant forage crops on.

Problems I hope this tractor can solve:

  • Bush hog the lawn when it gets too high
  • (I can't get there every week - or month - so sometimes the lawn gets crazy)
  • Mow the lawn
  • (by that I mean, cut it when it is knee or ankle high)
  • Bush hog the other 2 acres when forage crops are gone
  • Plow, disc fields for forage crops and also a vegetable garden.

Concerns:
Will the bush hog handle waist high grass without just folding it over?
Will the bush hog be able to mow when the grass isn't too high?
Will the 15hp motor be strong enough to plow or disc?

One thing I noticed is that the bush hog blades are VERY dull. Might as well be bar stock. I suppose that's okay for brush but what about grass? I have the feeling it will just beat on it.
Thought about welding a bit of lawnmower blade to the tips. Will this work?

Also, what should I pay for this setup?

Many questions, I know, so thanks in advance.

It really depends on the price for the setup. The brush hog blades are supposed to be sharpened like a lawnmower blade. Keep in mind that a used brush hog will have dull blades. Depending on what the last user decided needed to be mowed down (dirt, rocks, small children, ext...) The Kubota model is a good reliable unit as long as it's been maintained. If the brush hog is good and the blades are sharpened, it should do the job.

Careful on sharpening the bush hog blades you do not want to put a Sharp edge on them like a finish mower blade the edge will just roll over when you hit brush. That being said you do want some edge on it mine has always done a very good job on cutting grass you just can't cut as low as a finish mower the bush hog is not designed for that.
