L3400
Hello All,
I am selling my 2008 L3400hst and am trying to make sure all the safety switches work first. Several of them have never worked from the day I bought it used from the dealer. Here is what I have tested so far.

Clutch switch - will not start unless clutch is in. Good.
HST pedal switch - will not start if pushed fwd or rev, even if the clutch is in. Good.
PTO switch - It WILL start with the pto on. I have never used the pto so never noticed this until now. not good.
Seat switch- It will start and continue to run without anyone in the seat or with seat flipped up. Appears to do nothing. I also notice when operating it by hand it isn't really very fast to move as I would expect it to be a strong spring inside?
Anything else to test?

The switches are all present and the cables are all plugged in. I can't see any modifications. I always assumed maybe this is how it was since it has a backhoe on it and you would be in the backhoe seat while operating that.

How to troubleshoot further/ where to start?

thanks

Maybe since you have to have the clutch in to start...the PTO switch is ignored? Try starting it and turning the PTO on then getting off the seat. It should die in about 3 seconds.

Some attachments DO require PTO to be running when off the seat. Like a generator, or log splitter with PTO pump....etc. Kubota allows for this but you must flip the seat up. The seat switch is a 3 position switch. IT senses when its UP, when its down but no operator, and when its down with operator present.

AS to the seat switch.....again the tractor is allowed to run with you not on it. Provided its out of gear and maybe brake set. Consult your owners manual. With the info you provided lacking detail its impossible to say if things are working correctly or not

The tractor stays running with the seat in any position and the tractor in gear, no brake set and pto on or off.
My manual indicates that it shouldn't crank with the pto engaged and the clutch in.
It also indicates that if pto is on and you leave the seat it should stop

Then you have two options. I dont know your level of knowledge.

IF you have a multi-meter.....test the switches and see whats going on.

IF not or that is above your level....replace the switches and see if it fixes the issue

Thanks. I was hoping someone had a schematic or more details of the specific system. Perhaps there is a logic board involved or something else beyond just the switches.

The L3400 is pretty basic electrically.

Off hand, if your PTO switch doesn't know the PTO is on; the safety seat switch also assumes the PTO if off.

Adjust the PTO switch and the seat switch might kill the engine when you stand up.

Well quick check today.. There are 2 switches at the PTO, not sure why or where the 2nd one goes to but I see 2 connectors. Unplugged them and checked with a meter. Regardless of PTO lever position they are both closed always.

Have not investigated if it is how it is adjusted or how the metal tab is bent, etc.. very tight in there and hard to see.

Would be nice to know how they are supposed to work.. One open/one closed in each position or what?

Hope someone else can answer but Im just gonna take a wild guess.....

The seat switch is a 3 position switch. When you get off the seat and immediatly flip it up the PTO stays running and wont kill the tractor. Like I said earlier its for things like a generator or logsplitter running off a PTO pump.

Perhaps the second switch is related to that?
