I have an older Kubota L-175 tractor with a twin cylinder diesel engine. I am having a problem with it loosing power. I can drive it around in any gear with the bush hog attached without any problem. When I engage the bush hog and start letting out the clutch, it wants to bog down and die. It just looses power. I can spin the bush hog shaft by hand so I know the bearings in the hog are good. The pto spins normally without any excessive noise when the clutch in pushed in. I am at a loss. Any ideas whet the problem and solution might be?

Correction on the above problem. The hog spins fine with the tractor in neutral with the clutch out. When I put it in gear and start letting the clutch out is when it looses power.

Thanks

carnut66,

I restored a L175 and it has a multi speed PTO with several ranges as I recall. You should be running in range 1 with about 2200 rpm with a 4-5' max brush hog.

Maybe others can chime in here or do a search here in TBN for L175 PTO range settings..

It will run fine sitting still but as soon as you engage and cut it would bog down with the higher range setting.

Thanks for your response. I am using a 4 foot brush cutter and run the PTO at 550 rpm with the engine running about 2200. That is the recommended setting according to the owners manual. I can engage the cutter and it spins up to the operating rpm and the engine is fine. When I let the clutch out, the engine bogs and looses power and if I don't push in the clutch, it will die. I am not that familiar with diesels. I have bleed the injuectors, and adjusted the valves. It seems like the engine is starving for fuel. The fuel system is gravity feed through the fuel filter. Could I put a low pressure electric fuel pump on it to help?

CARNUT.

You state "it runs and drives fine when you dont run the PTO" also you can "engage and run the PTO at 540 RPM and it runs fine, you just cant run both together?

This is not an engine starvation issue IMO, but you might have a bad bearing in the transmission/pto so when you engage the PTO and transmission together it is binding up due to alignment/bearing issues..
