I recently purchased a 2000 Kubota KX61-2 mini excavator. This is my first excavator and I am a shade tree mechanic at best. I used the excavator for several hours digging stumps and I smelled something burning. Smoke was rising from the lower right of the machine. I backed up and when I tried to raise the boom, it would not work. I lost all hydraulics to the boom and bucket. I could still raise the blade and drive, but all the functions of the control sticks was gone. When I tried to turn off the ignition, it would not shut the machine down. I then found the engine kill switch (I'm not sure if that's the right name) and stopped the engine. It would not start again. Turning the key has no effect. I haven't had much time to work on it yet. I'm sure some wiring got toasted and that I can repair. My concern is about the hydraulic system. Being a complete rookie at turning wrenches on an excavator, is the boom somehow controlled or powered in some way by the electronics of the machine? It seems like a pretty simple machine, I'm just not sure where to start. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I also just got an older 61-2. For the “controls” to work the left and right “arms” have to be pushed down. Because it was working, make sure the position switch’s within each arm are making proper contact. There are some fuses behind your left foot when sitting, check them first thing.

I’m having the same exact problem. Did you ever figure out how to fix it.

Did you pin point the problem.
