I have a kubota D722 that is in my Clubcar UTV. Roughly 430 hours on it so it's not even broken in yet.

Recently my wife was driving the UTV and it cut off while driving through our lawn. It will crank but not start.

I checked to make sure the engine was getting fuel. All 3 injectors are getting clean fuel. I pulled the valve cover off and all 3 cylinders rockers are moving as they should. I took off the intake hose and cranked the motor over and there is noticeable smoke coming out of the intake plenum. I am not sure if this is indicating that there is a broken compression ring and it's blowing compression back into the intake....or if this is normal. I put my hand over the intake opening and while cranking it did not create a huge suction nor did it push my hand off by compression. The smoke coming from the intake smelled like straight ether.

If a cylinder broke a compression ring.....the other two would fire? So why would the engine not fire at all? To much of a coincidence to loose all 3 cylinders at once? What else could cause it to not fire?

YouTube There is a video of it turning over. The motor does not sound like it usually does either....a little different but hard to tell what's different.

I don't have a compression tester to test compression yet.

I thought about pulling the head to see if there is anything obvious going on under the head, but really not mentally ready to tackle it yet. I wouldn't think it would be 3 injectors failing simultaneously?

Intake is definitely supposed to suck. I'm curious to know why it smells like straight ether. Did you use ether in an attempt to start the engine? If so that could be the source of your problem and totally unrelated to why the engine died.

No use of ether.

If you've not used ether perhaps the smell isn't ether. Could it be the sweetish smell of antifreeze? If so you may be getting coolant into your combustion chambers. Hope for a bad head gasket. It gets a lot more expensive if it's not the head gasket.

Yes I know it's not ether, I am just comparing the smell that is coming out of the intake as smelling "like" ether. I'm sure it's the raw unburnt diesel.

U could remove the injectors & hang them outside the engine to SEE if they're firing fuel into the engine..
Another thing could be, do u fill it up by cans stored in the garage.. next to the "gas" cans.??
Does it sit for extended periods of time.. enough time for the fuel to go bad.?? {say a month}
Is it possible to remove a/the side plate below the inj. pump to see of the control rack is stuck.?? {some have an access cover plate}
How about an electric shut off solenoid..?? Does it shut off w a key or is it a cable pull.??
If its a key shut off, dollars to doughnuts, u dont have power to the solenoid.. To prove it, remove the solenoid & crank the engine..
Good luck.

make sure your glow plugs are working!. some diesels won't start without them!. you could try spraying the intake with WD40 to see if it starts.. I'd check compression on all cylinders. that will also tell you if the camshaft is ok, and not slipped or broken if you have at least 300 PSI..
