I'd check for a bent link. Maybe disconnect the link from the lever and compare how much travel you see in both cases. Keep in mind the gears need to be aligned to mesh so it might take a few tries to stop the tractor in a workable position. If the gear isn't fully engaging, it will cause uneven wear and given that it's likely been used more in forward than reverse, one side of the gear teeth is probably worn more than the other which explains your observation. There could be a bevel on the edge of the gear teeth.

If it seems the 4wd gears are fully engaging, then I suspect the wear to be quite advanced. In that case, I'd fully expect to find metal filings in your transmission fluid.

Hi thanks for your reply , i think if leaver was bent it would be the same in reverse , it does feel to drop into 4x4 gear easily and smooth , sounds like a big strip down , thats what i was hoping it wasnt going to be .
cheers

But if there's excessive wear on just one side of the gear teeth, the side that makes contact during forward motion, one would expect different behavior depending on the direction of travel. Inspecting the link and engaging the shift lever right at the transmission case is relatively easy to try. I still think it's worth checking.

This is exactly where I would start looking first. As Farmabro says, it is easy to do and before you go any further into the case you must determine if it is fully engaging. There is another sort of an odd thing to look at, are you sure it is not shifting somewhere in the drivetrain allowing slip joints of shafts to disengage?

well i have removed the rear plastics and seat etc so i can look at the levers properly.the lever seasm to be bolted with 2 bolts , same as high low , its bolted at a slight different angle to the bit fastened to the transmission shaft , which i think is correct.,i can move the lever fine its seems to go into 4 wheel drive ok,it does not catch on any thing(i cannt see a bend anyware causing a problem), unless i am missing something , i jacked all wheels of the ground put in to high box ,4 wheel drive , i could turn wheels at back to confirm it whas moving front wheel , but only with diff lock pressed otherwise both rears turned opposite to each ther ( i think this is the action of the diff) only when diff lock pressed did the front turn.it was hard to turn but it turn slowly in 4x4 and did not jump out.May be as it was only very slowly turning.
