Kubota BX1830 Hour meter reading 6000 hours

I am looking at a BX1830 in the next few days that has been in the dealers yard for some months. The hour meter reads 6000 but the dealer tells me the reading has to be wrong. The salesman who traded it in was told by the market gardener who owned it, from new, that the meter is wrong and it should be about 660 hours. So, a man told a man etc etc.
It would be almost impossible to log 6000 hours in such a machine anywhere in in 6-7 years since this model became available.
Does anyone have knowledge of a similar malfunction in a similar model or am I being led up the path?
Would appreciate any help on offer.

If in your shoes, responses of "Yes, that's a common issue." and "Never heard of it." wouldn't change my decision. (The only thing that would give me a warm and fuzzy would be several reports of failures that cause it to multiply by a known factor - I certainly don't expect that to be the case though.)

As you stated, it's unlikely to have 6K hours on it. So, assuming we feel safe knowing that the meter failed, what numbers are realistic for a commercial user? It could be anywhere between 600 and 2000, and that represents a huge swing in the value of the tractor.

If it were me, the tractor would have to look like it had 100 hours on it, and be priced as a tractor with over 1000. I'd be interested to hear what you decide. Good luck.

If it were me, there are enough BXs around that I'd find one with an accurate hour meter to purchase.

I could see that many hours easy on a commercial machine at a nursery/green house. Say he used 4hrs per day 5 day per week that makes for an easy 6000 hrs the meter tells the tale and could have someone left the key on a few times yup.
I would go off the condition of the machine not what the dealer it telling you. I have heard of may hour meters not working but not a digital meter adding 6k of hrs on its own.


FYI I am saying it would be easy to put the many hrs on the machine and it still look very nice.

my neighbor's BX2350 is 5 y/o and had around 600 hrs on it. he took it in for servicing and when he picked it up, hourmeter read over 6000hrs on it. he pointed it out to the service dept and their records clearly showed that they recorded 600 hrs prior to service. he didn't know what happened, but he knew it wasn't his fault. however, they initially tried to charge him $350 to replace the digital hourmeter (and associated 'computer'). but he contested and they conceded.

did this tractor recently receive service?...if so, records may show last accurate reading. just a thought

The hour meters on the BXxx30 series are Quartz timed analog wheel meter. My meter became defective as the ultrasonic welds in the face were not complete and it sucked moisture into it shorting out the circuit.

Good point - mathematically, it is actually possible. I love my 'bota, but I don't think I'd want to sit on it that much!
