Kubota B7100D
Hi,
My B7100D is grinding the gears when shifting from neutral in any gear. It does not grind them when going from one gear directry to another. I have adjusted the clutch and I believe it works OK.

I believe the idle has increased too much with usage and even through i dont have a tachometer, I want to try adjusting the idle lower.

On the governor I note two possible adjusters, they are both covered with a round plastic cover; one is facing forward and the other faces backwards. Reading through the IT manual, I believe I need to adjust the REAR adjuster.

Is this the right thing to do?

Also, I find it difficult to remove the plastic cover while the governor is mounted on the engine and I am afraid if I remove it by force, it might be damaged.

Am I on the right track? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks !:)

I have a 1980 B7100D & have always had to throttle down to shift from Neutral (tractor idling while hooking up, etc.) to any gear, otherwise it grinds a bit. Even after splitting tractor & replacing clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, etc. (PO greased throwout bearing carrier excessively & everything covered in grease), it's still acting pretty much the same. Clutch adj. as per specs. Never tried depressing clutch & waiting a bit to see if it's a rotating mass thing - which I think it is.

I'd check the clutch, but for that vintage most of the tractors built might grind when getting started. With wear just from the hours of useage the transmissions do not have a lot of resistance and it is difficult to judge when the shafts will be stopped to make shifting easier.

Thanks for the clarifying info guys I'm sure my idle is way high becuase pulling lightly on the stop lever, I can achieve lower RPM and the grinding is way less, so I definatelly have to lower the idle. Can you help with my idle adjusting questions?

Thanks for the diagram Travelover, however it marks #40 as the High idle adjustment screw, which is wire-sealed on top of the unit.
The IT manual indicates adjusting the Low Idle screw #19, however how do I remove the #39 plastic Cap without damaging it? Is it essential to run the engine till I get a repalcement and are those available?
Sorry for my daft ignorance, I dont want to do any damage as I need the tractor for plwowing soon!

Sorry, I'm no Kubota mechanic. That is all that I could find in the repair manual. Maybe someone else here can help you.

It's highly unlikely the governor setting has increased, if anything it should go down if the spring weakens over time. Try this, the next time you shift into gear from neutral depress the clutch for about 5 seconds first. That's normal operating procedure for an unsynchronized transmission.

My L3400 does the same thing, going from reverse to forward is "grind-free", as is from high range to low range, but any situation where I release the clutch in neutral will cause a grind if I don't wait before engaging any gear.

What happens is, the transmission gears are turning even with the transmission in neutral and the clutch released, but none of them are "engaged" and driving the tractor. When you depress the clutch, the gears slow down and then stop, at which point you can engage the gear without grinding. It took me a while to discover this, but it works.
