I discovered this particular tractor (kubota B6100HST) on a JD lot and was hoping to get as much info on it before investigating further. My needs are for finish mowing and pasture mowing, snow removal. The use of ground engaging implements would also be nice. The BX2200 would be ideal for my needs but I want to consider less expensive alternatives (used). The asking price is $3600 with 169 hours on the meter. Your opinions and references in regard to this model would be greatly appreciated.

sierrasage,

A Quick Comparative Summary (B6100 vs BX1800 or BX 2200): The B6100 is a slightly larger tractor (with more ground clearance) with a smaller engine.

Bottom Line: It is hard to pass up a NEW tractor with warranty. It is also hard to pass up an older tractor with 169 hours at 50% or more off the new price. I have never heard anything bad about the B6100; look at the comparisons below to see if the B6100 may meet your needs.

The B6100D is the gear drive / 4wd version of the B6100HST-D (an "E" suffix would indicate 2wd, as in B6100E or B6100HST-E). The main difference between the B6100D and the B6100HST-D is that the hydrostatic model has less PTO horsepower available.

The following B6100D information is from my B5100D/B6100D/B7100D operator's manual and the BX 1800/2200 sales brochure:
....................B6100...........................[BX1800]
Engine Size:...3 cylinder / 41.2 cu inch...[3 cylinder / 43.9 cu in]
Engine HP:.....14 hp @ 2800 rpm...........[18 hp @ 3200 rpm]
PTO HP:........11.................................[13.7 ]
Ground Clnc...9-7/8 inch.......................[6.7 inch]
Weight:........1038 lbs..........................[1255 lbs]

Note that the BX engine is not significantly larger than the B6100 (comparing cubic inches); the HP advantage is gained mainly by the higher operating RPMs.

The following "maximum" recommended implements for the B6100 comes from the operator's manual as well:

Rotary Mower: 42" cut / 300 lbs
Finish mower: 48" cut / 300 lbs
Rotary tiller: 42"
Rear Blade: 60"
Front Loader: 42" / 500 lbs
Box Blade: 42" / 380 lbs
3 point lift: 400 lbs.

Hope this helps,
Kelvin

{check the model B6100 HSD?}
I've seen this unit a number of times at different auctions going for $1800-2400 on the average... the higher price normally includes a mower... With that said...

My opinion... when you get under 16 PTO hp, you are severely limiting your options for attachments and getting work done... Now isn't that what a tractor is about... getting work done...

This is an early hydro unit @ 11 PTO HP, unlike the current crop of hydro's... major advances over the years. I guess the best example would be to compare the automatic transmissions of the early 60's with today's technology. Buying a older tractor with a gear transmission is not as chancy ...

About the most work I would expect from this machine would be mowing grass @ 11 hp...

The 11 PTO HP is too underpowered and the early hydro design would make me hesitate and stop making any purchase.

{check the model B6100 HSD?}

According to all of the older and newer sales brochures that I have as well as the operators and shop manuals that I have, it appears that Kubota uses the HSD and HSE designations for the newer tractor model numbers (>mid-80s?) and uses the designations HST-D and HST-E for the older tractor model numbers.

Are you saying you can just pull the pto shaft out of the housing? If so, there should be a bolt that goes into the pto shaft so it can't come out. Sounds like you have some parts missing or the bolt has been broken off before and the guys working on it are overlooking it. You should have to pull the pto plate off before the shaft and bearing can be worked on at all. You said it has been in A shop 3 times, what kind of shop?
