These are two VERY VERY different machines.

I suggest filling out your profile and also letting us know what sort of tasks you plan to do with your tractor.

val:

Either tractor would work a snow blower fine. Are both 4WD? Does either have a loader. Do you have a particular snowblower size in mind? I am assuming you are talking about a rear 3PT snowblower?

The MF is physically quite a bit larger and a heavier a tractor. I usually see them at farm auctions around here. After the MF 135 I think the MF 231's seem to be popular around here so I imagine that parts supply will be good. For some reason I think they were made in Poland but I'm not too sure. They seem to be a typical choice for someone who is looking to do farm chores like running a small square baler, plowing along with the many other things like clearning snow etc. etc.

OTOH, the Kubota is a light compact machine that is really made for an acerage and chores that come with an acrerage, more so than a farm. The B2910 is a very light tractor and is a great choice for finish mowing a lawn, clearing snow etc. etc.

The Kubota will have a smaller turning radius and will do much better in smaller spaces than the MF.

There is a lot of overlap between all tractors: Both will handle a 3PT blower or a rotary cutter fine. Both will run a wood splitter (3PT or hydraulic?). The MF will handle bigger implements overall.

Any other chores you have in mind? If you said you wanted to plow, or run a small baler, I'd say go look at the MF 231. If you said you want to finish mow grass, I'd say look at the Kubota. Both will clear snow fine. If one was 4WD, I would lean to that particularly for snow clearing.

I think that you will find that the more information you provide about your intended uses, property size, plans that you have for the future with your property, part of the world your property is located in, length of your drive, etc. the more responses you will get.

There are a LOT of tractors in between a Kubota B2910 and a MF 231 that will probably serve you well. If we had more details about your situation, we might be able to make suggestions about other machines that you might want to keep an eye out for as well.

thanks for the response both tractors has a snowblower in the rear on the 3 pt hitch the b2910 is a 4x4 has a george white blower and its a 2002 with 2300hrs,the mf is not 4x4 and a 1990 with 600 hrs only it has a pronovost snow blower, they both have a cab the Kubota is homemade but well built, the mf 231 has a simms cab,no front end loader on either one i intend of using it for personel use only, clear snow ect.,i want to buy a woodsplitter for the 3pt in the rear,i have a large driveway and tired on waiting for the contractor to come and open up my driveway, last winter we had an average of 2 snow storms a week,so you can imagine that the contractors were very busy, overall wich tractor is the best buy they want $13.000.00 each,oh yes i live in northern New-Brunswick Canada so this is snow country....any info is appreciated ...Thanks

Val - I don't know about George White blowers but Provonost is one of the better blowers out there.

I know the feeling waiting for others to clear your drive and like the ability of doing it myself.

My honest opinion is that neither of these tractors is being offerred to you on the cheap. I would expect the B2910 to be a lot cheaper particularly since it does not have a FEL and with 2100 hours.

Compare with the fact that you can get a brand new L3400 (same tractor that I have), 34 HP with a front end loader for $19000 or so + tax in Ontario. Of course that is without a cab though.

Personally I would not buy a 2WD tractor either for snow clearing or for loader work. I live on flat property and I still would not buy any thing other than a 4WD. That said, I do know a number of people that clear snow with a 2WD just fine but they do use chains.

Are these both local purchases you are looking at? You might want to continue to shop around. Particularly if snow clearing is your major use, there is still a while before you have to make up your mind.

The market for used tractors in the USA is quite a bit bigger than hear in Canada and there is no duty - you have to pay GST and PST. Personally thats what I would be looking to do in your case. Do you have the ability to haul a tractor? If not do you have a friend who could do it for you? You can also always pay someone to haul it. With the CDN $ at the price it is, this route would be my recommendation.

I suggest checking out tractorhouse.com to see what kind of deals are out there. I would suggest a lower hour tractor (<600) or so hours to ensure you spend less time wrenching.

Is $13000 exactly at your budget?

Not sure what the rest of your property is like but if I were you I would STRONGLY suggest getting a tractor with a FEL. You will be amazed at the chores you will use it for. I had no intention of getting one until others at TBN talked me into it.

You mentioned wood splitter.... guess what is good for hauling around split firewood - an FEL of course!. The FEL makes the tractor at least 2-3x more useful.

You can get I brand new Kubota mx5100 2wd with a shuttle shift for about $13000. That might be an option. Similar in capacity to a 231 Massey, maybe weighs a little less, but a little more pto HP.

Val- I live in northern ontario, in the mountains just off lake superior and we a huge amount of snow here.

I bought a Kubota B7800 with rear blade a few years ago as my snow plowing guy couldn't do a good job around a new garage with his truck/plow combo. Last winter I had to buy a used 60" snowblower for the back 3PT hitch as I couldn't keep up with the snow just using the rear blade. I just sold that rear blade as I am going to buy a box blade for trail clearing and driveway leveling and other stuff

$13K is way to much for a 2910 without a FEL and over 2000 hours on it. I think it's worth $7500 max. I'd add a Woods 84 loader later and you have a sweet machine. For sure you need 4WD with a tractor and you will need chains on the back tires at least. I added front chains last winter and my tractor became a monster for snow clearing.

If you need to add the splitter you will need a valve kit which comes with the loader or add rear remotes which are not cheap-$1000 or so

thanks guys you are all right its way too expensive but in my corner of the world tractors are way up their in price and if we want to buy a machine we have to pay the big bucks, example a tc30 4x4 with cab,fel and rear blower for 16 grand ,if i could find a good machine at a good price in ontario i would buy it,it would probably be cheaper even with the shipping,i don't even know where to start looking...you guys have any ideas please let me know and again thanks for the feedback..............Val
