Is the B2100 set up to handle a post hole digging auger? If so, are there any recommended makes/models/sizes that would work in harmany with this 21 HP tractor?

I've never had the need for a post hole digger so I'm not sure what brand/model to tell you, but, I'm sure it would handle it without any trouble as long as you aren't using a really big auger.

Hi. Your B2100 should handle a typical post hole digger without any problems. The 3 point hitch is Class 1 and so are most augers.

Depending upon the type of soil with which you will be working, you may want to consider one with a powered reverse. I have read accounts where the auger was used in wet clay. The auger simply screwed itself into the clay like a corkscrew, without creating a hole. Most folks say that if you go slow with the digging, all will be well.

I can't help you with specific makes and models...sorry. Try performing a search on TBN, you WILL find lots of hints, "do's-and-don'ts" and stories.

I think your B2100 is about the same size as my B2400 and mine will run a PHD without any problem. You have to be careful because in the fully raised position there is only about 6" of clearance between the tip of the auger and the ground so you have to plan your route when moving in order to prevent it bottoming out and starting to swing all over the place. Before you buy, it might be an idea to take your tractor to the dealer and have it mounted, just to make sure you can get the height to move it around. Having to tie it back every time or dragging it around on the ground gets to be a pain.

PHD come in a range of costs and presumably, quality. For the B2400 at the house I have a lighter cheaper model because I don't use it very often but with the hours I put on it, it should still last forever. At the farm, we have a heavier, more expensive Rhino model because there it gets a lot more use. I think you need to analyse your particular needs and make your decision.

I use a 9" auger on mine and would think that 12" is probably the biggest that your machine could handle comfortably, depending on what you are digging in but I bet that others on this board have used larger.

Like all post hole diggers.. they have to be used in an up and down motion or else they will just screw into the ground! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Once you start to dig... lift up and it will get rid of the excess dirt... go back down further and then continue to do the same until you reach your correct depth.

You have to watch when buying attachments for the BX series tractors and other "Estate" size tractors. One of the responses to your post stated that they are a "Catagory 1." They are BUT they are a LIMITED Cat 1. By "limited' they mean the hight is restriced. So if you put a regular Cat 1 Post Hole digger on it will never lift high enough to get the auger verticle. Woods makes a post hole digger and other attachements specifically for "Limited Cat 1" Regarding the post digger, it has a shorter auger, I think 36" However they have an extension that you can install that will allow you to dig to about 48" if required. I think you have to dig part way without the extension, then install it, then dig to the 48" depth. IF you'll only dig to 36" then the extension will work fine.
When buying any attachment for a Sub-Compact tractor, watch the height for 3-pt attachments. I got burned when I bought a "bargain" rear-blade that fit a standard Cat 1. The BX23 I have would only raise it about 3" above the ground. A little work with cutting torches and welded fixed that but the time took the "bargain" out of it. I have a Woods box blade and it fits and works great.

I have a Land Pride PD-10 on my BX1500 and it works fine. I use a 9" auger. THis model is designed for plenty of ground clearance on the small tractors, and will dig about 30" deep.

FWIW:

The original post mentioned a B2100. The B series prior to the BX was a larger tractor: a compact not a sub-compact.

The B2100, B2400, B7300 all have the same larger frame size and will handle category 1 implements without the lift problem seen with some of the BX models.
