I just purchased the above rig which measures approximately 17' long.

For maximum versatility, I would like to haul it on a low profile dump trailer.

Do you guys think I could get by with a 14' dump?

I'm new to this and know very little about tractors and even less about trailers, so I am unfamiliar with how much "hanging over" leeway I have at the front and rear of the trailer ( I will use a standard rear hitch mount on my truck).

I understand PJ and BriMar among others, are the top brand names, but I am just a homeowner with relatively limited needs. At the same time I don't want to purchase junk, so would appreciate specific brand advice.

No comments are too basic and I greatly appreciate the expertise offered on this Forum.

Thanks.

First off lets start with your truck. What year, make, model, engine, 4x4 or not, engine, gear ratio, bed length, ect. If you need I can find out what your legal tow rating is.

Next off you are trying to cram 17gallons of shat into a 14gallon bucket. Pardon the pun but its not legal. Is it done, yes. Not safe and not legal.

The law states that any piece of wheeled machinery being transported under 10,000# must be properly secured. This includes the loader buck. It must be flat on the deck and have a seperate strap/chain holding it down. Same with whatever is on the 3 point. Most states do allow a 3' overhang from the rear as long as its properly secured.

You really need a 20' trailer to haul a 17' long rig. You will need the extra length to get the balance right and to get a 45 deg or so angle on your straps/chains to all 4 corners of the rig.

You are new to this. Yes, guys with experience get away with it but its on the ragged edge. Tow and towing safe are two different things. I have been in the trailer business for 20 years and have seen it all. I tow 10,000 miles a year and trust me, things happen. If you need any help I can or others on here can guide you.

I sure do agree with Diamondpilot. Not the proper rig to haul a tractor. If you are going a few miles once or twice a year maybe, although I still think you will have problems at 14'. If you think you will do any money making work for sure the wrong choice.

By the way, my B21 has been a great tractor for the last ten years.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Yes, I should have mentioned that I won't be hauling the tractor on a regular basis; once per year, a distance of perhaps 9 miles, might be overstating the case. I just felt I needed some way to transport it for service, or RARE use elsewhere. It will pretty much be a one location machine.

Having said that, and I DO realize it only takes one accident, do you still feel the 14' Dump is a bad idea?

Thanks again guys for your experience and expertise.

14' dumps are tough to secure a tractor in. My uncle has a 14' 14,000# Bri-Mar dump and we have tried to haul his tractor, a 32HP JD with loader, and it will barley fit.

For occasional service and such why not just have the dealer pick it up or a roll back wrecker take it in for $75?

For a nine-mile trek - by the time you hooked trailer to truck, loaded tractor on the trailer, and properly secured, you could have just driven the tractor and likely been about the same time. Owning an appropriate trailer along with appropriate truck is expensive.

+1 on everything said. If it barely fits, you will not be able to properly position the weight so that you have 10-15% on the hitch. You still didn't mention what truck you are using.

FWIW, I have seen my truck (3/4t at the time) and dump trailer start to move down the driveway when I was putting dirt in the trailer and had too much weight to the rear. The trailer tongue had enough lift so that the rear trailer brakes (parking brake/tranny in park) didn't have enough weight to hold it :( Kind of scary!

I agree, for your needs either having it hauled or driving the unit the 9 miles makes more sense.

Thanks for the continued input, guys.

I never thought about the simplicity of hiring someone to move the tractor, and wasn't aware the service people (hope I never need them), had a pickup capability. There is a local Kubota shop here, so I will check with them.

I live in a busy suburban area, and I don't think driving the tractor on the local roads would work too well.

I still might get the dump trailer for its intended use-I like the versatility they provide. I'll ask around on the appropriate sub-forum here for specific brand advice.

Here is my take on a situation like you have. Most service can be done yourself or find a competent mechanic, even the dealer, to come to your place and do it. If it is broke they will usually have a pickup and deliver service for maybe $100. It would take you 30 break downs to pay for a trailer and all that is required. Also, the last two tractors I transported for service for friends would not start or drive and we had to winch them up on the trailer. Bad fly wheel and a broken clutch. This is where a roll back wrecker at say $75 could load the machine in 5 minutes and be done with it.

Get a dump trailer for what it is, not to haul a piece of machinery. Yes, most can do it but its not convenient and the best solution.

I agree with most of what's been said but I would say if you can afford the 14 foot go for the 16 foot dump and you would be able to haul your tractor and save alot of shoveling as dump trailers are next best thing to owning a dump truck.
But remember its easy to over load a dump trailer.
