I have a 7040 does it have enough hp and weight to run a 14ft hydraswing mower conditioner say a model 8370 Case IH or 1160 Hestton. I do have some hills. Dealer tells me yes but I want your opinions..
Thanks,
Todd

definately check manufac. specs on the pto hp requirements of the implement and add 5 hp for leeway. If you plan to use it regularly at that level, I highly recommend jumping up to the 85 or 9540. having had the 7040 and now the 85 I can tell you it's much more tractor/ features for HD applications think there's around a 3k price difference between 85 & 95. bb

todder I realize my post is late, but I'm never on much. Not familiar with the 8370 Case but the 1160 Hesston specs a 60 hp. I use a 7040 with a 1110 (7ft) on ground as steep as I dare bale with no problems at all. The difference being 7' less sickle and approx. 2450# of gross weight. May very well be all that 7040 wants.
Hi big bubba.

A comparison point: I drive a Hesston 1071 [7' sickle] with an L-3450. On level ground it will pull it fast enuf to overtake the sickle. No problem on hills but have to gear down going up. The L2550 does OK too, but needs a downslope to be able to overtake the sickle.

mr todder: rereading your question, I now realize that you already own a 7040 and are trying to choose the right haybine. if the implement calls for a 60 hp pto it's a close one for your tractor....I believe your tractor has 62 on the pto. it's a tough question, one that you have to ask yourself for the future, whether to drop down on the implement or consider trading in and take a big hit over the implement cost. if you do upgrade, go with the 9540. best of luck bb

The 7040 is not big enough IMO

That is a very heavy "haybine" and mounts to the 3 pt IIRC

I would go with at LEAST 90 hp and would prefer 100 hp to cut a good stand

Thanks for all your responses guys that's what I'm looking for! Went and looked at a 499 New Holland hydraswing today. I like it. 12 ft wide might be easier to handle. I agree that the 8370 case ih is to much weight and I don't have the hp to run it. I think this 499 New holland may be a good fit. What kinda weight is this 499? Hp to run ?

Thanks,
Todder

I think that may still be to big for your tractor

I would go with a 9' New Holland or similiar

How much do you need to mow?

You did not mention much about your 7040, they can be setup light or heavy. Is yours 2wd or 4wd? Cab or rops? Cast iron rear wheels? Filled rears? Front end loader on that machine? What did you eat for lunch (just kidding there ...).
Sorry, I'm not familiar with the power requirements for those implements.

I don't know the horsepower needed for those haybines, but I can vouch for the 7040 handling larger implements than it's spec'ed for. It will probably work but you might have to travel slower, especially when going through thick hay.

Perhaps a 12' would be more appropriate for the tractor, and easier to transport too.
