Hi Kevin,

You'll want to cover at least the width of the machine. I think you'd do well with either brand but you'll pay way more for the land Pride and I don't think you'd be getting much more for the extra money.... I'm the owner of land pride implements and they are good but pricey. Most people use a tiller twice a season, bed prep in the spring and tilling in the left over stalks and such in the garden in the fall.

So my recomendation would be to stay closer to 42 than 50 because the weight will be a bigger deal that the HP requirements for your machine. Stick with a gear drive tiller if you can, and you should look for 6 tines per section rather than 4. Rotation... if your gardening in think it's best to have forward rotation.

Regards,
Chris

Good advice! We offer the King Kutter 48" XB tillers which are made just for subcompact tractors. They feature 6 tines per flange, a slip clutch driveline, forward rotation and are gear driven.
I don't think that gear driven is any better than a chain drive on tillers under 6'. Our best selling tillers for small tractors, made by Sicma in Italy, is the Phoenix T4-40 and T4-48.
Sicma makes some of the best tillers on the market, some of which are rebranded by tractor manufacturers as OEM or sold to and re-branded by high-end equipment manufacturers.

Kevin,
I have a bush hog RTC 48 (made in Italy)tiller. I have been using it for nearly 5 years on a bx2660. It is a subcompact tiller and I would highly recommend this unit. For me, it has been virtually maintenance free. I have used it doing my own garden and a number of gardens for friends and neighbors. I dont know if it would hold up to years of commercial use, as a home owner machine you cant go wrong.

This is a perfect example of my previous post. Compare the Phoenix T4-40 and T4-48 with the Bush Hog RTC-40 and RTC-48. Looks like the same tiller to me!

Give us some idea of usage -
Are you tilling a 50' x 50' twice a year or an acre a day?
Are you tilling sand or clay?
And how much can you afford to pay?
And why only the two brands?
New or used?
Where in Kentucky?

Lot's of threads here.
Reasons I think the Q's are pertinent -

I just got a used KK 5' for well less than half the new price. Guy used it for a family medium sized garden twice a year for 5 years. Probably well less than 20 hrs usage, and looks it. He could of rented one for about $50/day, been out $500, over the 5 years. I'm glad he "tested" it for me so I could save about $1,000.

If your tilling for a lot of friends or as a business you might want to pay more for a guaranteed heavy duty tiller rather than a value model.

If the soil is easy to till you can go bigger to start.

If your wallet is deep you probably don't care to buy used.

If your near Sweet tractors Food plot and part time farmer, gentleman farmer tractor tools for everyone nationwide. sometimes he has used.

To me if you are only going to be tilling a 1/2 acre or less plot twice a year the rental route would be the most economical.

And a word of warning - from what I've read here if you choose to deal with Everything Attachments be prepared for your face to hurt, because you won't stop smiling.

I use a Land Pride RTR0550 on my BX2660 and it works well so 48" 50" will be fine; brand up to you.

With 19 pto hp you will enjoy a 48-50 inch forward tine tiller. The only time I would recommend a reverse tine tiller is on VERY hard ground or in places where there is only one direction of travel. They spit their spoils forward so at the end of the pass the hole can be filled up.

I have a Kuhn EL32 that's about 48" wide. I run it behind a B2400 with 18 PTO hp. Works great. It's just wide enough to cover the tire tracks.

As others have said, if you can rent, that's probably the cheapest way to go. It's one of those attachments that I used the heck out of for the first two years but since then it's maybe 30 minutes to an hour twice a year. Since I didn't put in the big grden this year, I didn't even use it.
