I just bought some studs - 1" x #12 screw from Kold Kutter. They are 1" from tip to shoulder.

A quick look makes me think they are too long. Tires are new. They were the shortest #12's I found.

Am I going to hurt my tires with 1" screw in studs at the high point of the thread in the tires?

I have tried two sets of different chains and the ride is just too rough.

No one answered so maybe i can help someone else.

I put the 1" screws around the outside edge of the tire, inside and out. The middle looked iffy. So I bought some 1/2" hex head screws and put them in the middle of the tire tread.

I am running on hard ice, very little road contact out at the street. 10% grade out by the road but flat everywhere else.

The difference between the screws and chains: Screws are way more friendlier on my back and I don't see any less traction. With the R4 industrial tires I can still climb part way up the snow piles and haven't been stuck once. Used the locking rear diff once for traction. The chains were just too rough.

Glad the studs are working for you.
We have looked at them a few times, especially these;
Tire Studs Selection | Grip Studs® Screw-In Tire Studs | Traction in Ice, Snow and Dirt | Tire Stud Selection

I would be a bit concerned with the regular hex head screws,
are you planning on removing them when winter is over.
Will the heads still be on them to get a hold of them to remove them
or will the threaded section be buried and working in the tire.

As far as the chains having a rough ride most or all of the common ones do,
The Aquiline Talon do not have a rough ride it is not much different then the ride of bare rubber tires;
Aquiline Talon Tractor Tire Chains
Most of the Euro style chains ride quite well and provide excellent traction.

The screws are hex with a slot too. There is also a shoulder so they won't work their way in. It would only take 15-20 mins. to remove all of them. I am on ice now or snow so the "wear factor" will be in the spring. I will be on gravel in the summer so the only damage I have to worry about is the screws. Will probably take them out.

I ran the same screws in the fork truck tires way back at the cycle shop. We were always unloading crates of new bikes from semis and the parking area was not level. Fork trucks with smooth tires are the worst on ice so I put some screws in. It didn't take that many to make a huge difference and they stayed in year round. I think they were about 5/8" long.

Kold Kutter has many sizes of screws. #8, #10 and #12. I wanted the 12's for the strength and 1" was the shortest in that size. I may go back and order some 10's that will be shorter for the center of the tire.

I put some screws into the Ag lugs of the Gravely but never really got to use it in the snow before I sold it.

Big worry I have with the screws it with throwing them and having them in the driveway to maybe later be taken up into the car tires.
