I was tempted to buy a clutch i saw for a deutz diesel but I would have to extend the tub.

Yes, the tub would need to be lengthened. I didn't know Kohler offered such an item. It appears to go over the shaft. But which shaft? The existing shaft or the added PTO shaft that sticks through the fan shroud. In my case, there are pumps on both sides of the engine. However, in more recent versions, all of the pumps are on one side of the engine. One clutch would disengage all of the pumps. Just wondering... and spending other people's money and time, of course... :D

MR- Isn't it about load? If "your" clutch disengaged the drive and PTO pumps, a big chunk of the load on the engine would be "off line".

Of course, cost of clutch, lengthened tub/cover vs block heater and oil heater plus 15 years of electricity...Then there is the option of insulating the garage to keep everything warmer...

YMMV...

All the best,

Peter

As discussed by many of us many times, why didn't they put a clutch in it from the beginning? Especially since it appears there's one available from the factory. I've google searched for them and seem to be finding them for under $300. It might have added some length to the tub, but I'd bet it could be squeezed in there. If I moved my engine towards the rear, put all the pumps towards the front, and put the battery over the pumps, that would take up the space.

I think Power Trac, being in WV, doesn't know how hard these things are to start in the cold, and what a winner they'd have on their hands if they had a way to ease engine starting in those conditions. I also don't think they understand the issues of cold weather starting and the current gas engine choices. That, or they really don't see it affecting their business model.

Their primary business is building mine equipment, where it is always a balmy 52F.

Speaking on hard starting in colder weather or im my case, cooler, the cold cranking amps vary a bit on same sized batteries. I've found the higher amps really helps with starting.

Better battery, bigger cables, anything to lower the resistance to the starter is good.

MR I sort of disagree with your idea that power trac does not know about cold weather starting. Different times I have talked to Terry they have harder winters than we do in PA. maybe not quite as long or cold but they get a lot of snow . Also they are located in Va. not WV

Yeah, I keep getting VA and WV mixed up. Maybe I'll just stick with Tazewell...

Tazewell's annual average snowfall is 18". South Bend is 66". There's is 4% less than the average state. Ours is 197% more than the average state. As for temps, they average about 8-9 degrees warmer than us in winter and we average 2-3 degrees hotter than them in summer. So we see more weather extremes here than they do.

I got than 90" in just 24 hours back in 1992 I believe. Took 1/2 a day to shovel a path to the tractor and then a day to dig out with the FEL. The nearest town officially gets more than 90" a year but we get about twice that or more each year. Actually is one of the things I like about this place - I hate cold rainy days.

That is a nice looking clutch set up and I agree, being from cold weather country, it would make starting a lot easier. Have you checked on the price yet?

my google-fu is weak. That manual has no part numbers associated with the clutch, and I was unable to turn up a part number elsewhere, making it difficult to check prices.

Google-Fu is the word. I couldn't find an exact match either. The closest that I found is a 2423903S at Jack's small engine, but it is $1,000, and I am not sure it is the exact clutch. I'd be tempted to call Kohler. As far as I can tell many of their clutches have been discontinued. There are a bunch of electric clutches available for ~$200, if you know the shaft sizes.

I found a cross reference to a Rockford wet disk clutch that looks similar.

All the best,

Peter

$1100?

yikes. Not one of those in my future.

If I went to all the trouble of putting in a tub extension, it would be to shoehorn in a diesel engine or a water-cooled EFI engine.
