I searched and couldn't find anything on this, so here goes.

I'm getting close to being done with all the heavy dirt work I needed to do, which means I won't really need a full size backhoe, dozer and dump truck parked in the barn before long. The short version is I've been moving a couple thousand yards of dirt in stages to areas around my property. I have the dirt in a big pile, use the backhoe to load the dump truck, drive it where it needs to go and then use the dozer to spread it out and grade it. Once this is done, I can get rid of all of those machines and rent something if I need a dozer or mini-ex for a day here and there (not too likely).

My general plan has been to sell the backhoe, dozer, dump truck, and my Massey and buy a Utility machine in the 75hp+ size as well as a SCUT to handle all my tractor chores. I also have a 16' dump trailer which I'll keep to take care of moving a little dirt/mulch/etc as needed.

I'm just starting to look around to figure out what I want and noticed that Kioti's PX9020 is listed as having a Tier III Perkins engine. How are they getting around Tier IV requirements? Was it based upon when they bought the engines, or something similar?

I'm not super hung up on staying away from Tier IV, and the PX9020 is probably a bit more tractor than I was planning on, but I have the room for a larger machine, and I wouldn't have to worry about a DPF failing down the road, or deal with DEF now. Seems like a win-win, but maybe I'm missing something?

GMan,

I can't speak specifically about the tractor. However, I've done a fair amount of research on the emission standards. They are very confusing, mostly due to the fact that the EPA allowed some phase in/phase out based on percent of production.

Hopefully the View attachment Nonroad Compression-Ignition Engines -- Exhaust Emission Standards | Emission Standards Referenc.pdf I copied off the EPA website will shed some light.

My guess is you may have found something, maybe Tier 4 interim that falls in this phase in/phase out area. You know for sure it does not have DPF or need for DEF. A plus in my mind.

Good luck.

I don't know the details but I believe there's a period of time that allows some flexibility on final Tier 4. I also believe it has to due with date of manufacture, and ratio of Tier 4 compliant tractors sold vs non compliant tractors sold. I've also been told there's a period of time where the manufacturer can choose to continue selling Tier 3 tractors and pay a fine of some kind.

The PX9020's are almost all gone now, I don't think Kioti has any more to ship so basically you're looking at dealer inventory.

But, Deutz Fahr has told us they will continue to import the Tier 3 Agrotrons (135 to 165hp) through 2017 even though they have final Tier 4 compliant tractors at the same horsepower.

I don't know how, but as mentioned the PX9020's are not going to be around for long. A local dealer bought the last two in NA and one of them is sold.....The only ones left are on the lots.

Next will be a smaller displacement Doosan engine.

I like my DK better than the PX for a few reasons, and I'm guessing I would like the PX over the next gen. I could be wrong, but I think the accountants are chintzing here and there...

Hi GmanBart, if you want a large utility tractor without DPF or DEF then you should take a look at the McCormick X4 series. Depending on which one you get they use either a 2.9 liter or 3.6 liter Deutz engine and only have a DOC. Mahindra also has a couple of large size utility tractors without DPF or DEF. I'm seriously looking at the X4-50 with cab and a buddy seat.

Here's a link:

X4 Series - Product range - McCormick - Argo Tractors S.p.A. - Landini, McCormick, agricultural equipments, tractors, agriculture, original spare parts

Have fun shopping

If you want something a tad smaller the New Holland Workmaster in the 50, 60, & 70 HP units have no DPF's or DEF. They utilize an internal EGR and catalytic converter. Who knows how reliable they will be long term but I wanted no DPF or DEF. I copied and pasted the New Holland description.

To meet tough Tier 4B emissions standards, the New Holland emissions treatment system uses a combination of internal exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) to control nitrogen oxides (NOx) and a particulate matter (PM) catalyst. The PM Catalyst system has two unique sections a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) that turns nitrous oxide (NO) into nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and a soot collection and combustion chamber that eliminates the remaining soot. Unlike other tractors that require extra fluids, or that use a diesel particulate filter (DPF) that must be 途egenerated, the New Holland system is completely automatic, with no need to stop working while the tractor regenerates.
