My Kioto keeps runnning the battery down and I don't know if its a short or the charging system. Can anyone tell me how to check whether the alternator/regulator are operating using my volt/amp meter?
I assume I can check for a short by checking the resistance between the two disconnected battery cables w/ all electrical turned off.

Check the voltage across the pos and neg terminals of the battery with it turned of, then check it with it running. That should tell you if the alternator is putting out. You should see around 13.5 volts with it running i believe.

If you remove the positive terminal with the tractor switch in the off position, put one lead of the tester on the battery and on lead on the battery wire. If you have current flowing then you have a short somewhere.

Im not a mechanic but this should get you headed in the right direction.

Be sure to post back with what you find out so maybe this will help someone else.

Thanks for the info Ken. I just found the batteries in my multi meter are dead. When I find the special size batteries at the store, I will perform the tests and post the results.

OK I finaly got the multi meter batteries and found I think the worst possible outcome. The charging system appears to be working, w/ the tractor running I get 13V + and w/o the tractor running about 12.4V; however w/ the switch turned off and the tractor not running I still register about 12.4V when I touch the positive battery post w/ one lead of the meter and the positive tractor connection w/ the other. So I guess this means I have a short somewhere. Does anyone have any suggestions w/ this kind of problem w/ a Kioti lb19?

Check the water in the battery. Clean and reconnect both positive and neg cables, and the ground side of the neg cable.

Your alternator is probably OK. If your battery is not holding a charge, It could be several reasons. The battery may be on it's way out. there might be some current draw somewhere. What is the voltage drop when starting. With the engine running, , pull the headlight switch, and see what the voltage is. If the voltage leaks down over time, the battery is probably going bad. How old is the battery? What is the voltage after 24 hrs, after running it for about an hour. Measure the voltage at shut down, and in the morning.

Im gonna assume that you have a fuse panel with at least a few fuses in it. You could pull one fuse at a time and see if you can isolate the current drain to one circuit. Your gonna need a wiring diagram i would think.

Thanks for everybody's input. I have checked all the items people suggested and come up w/ the following. the charging system is working and the battery is good; I traced the power drain to the regulator. One line going to the regulator (from the battery?) shows voltage and two lines coming out of the regulator to the generator also show voltage. These occur when the ignition is off. I would have thought the tractor had an alternator w/ a built in regulator but the wiring diagram in the manual labels these items as called out above.
Any ideas about what may be happening here? I would think maybe the regulator or the generator??????

I would suggest pulling out all of the fuses from the panel. Then, with the engine switched off, remove one lug from the battery. Then, slowly move the removed lug back to the battery terminal. If there is a small spark as the lug reaches within 2-3 mm from the battery, then the leak is somewhere from the battery to the fuse panel. If the regulator is in this section, then remove one wire at a time, and keep retrying the 2-3 mm gap from the battery terminal. This way, there is a larger possibility that the circuit with the problem will be identified.
