Kioti-Daedong and the Kubota influence\'

G'day from Australia,

Here is an interesting story regarding the reason that we in Australia have to buy our Kioti Tractors as Daedong. This information came directly from a past Kubota Australia Sales Executive and was verified by two Daedong dealers and a Daedong Field Manager.

As most of you know, and some try to deny it, Daedong for many years made components in Korea for the Japanese company, Kubota. These components were in just about every Kubota and evidence can be seen on many by simply looking at the parts boxes and stampings on the Kubota genuine parts boxes, and subsequently many of the parts are interchangeable.

Eventually the relationship between Daedong and Kubota declined and Daedong marketed their own products under the 'Kioti' brand name in the USA and many other countries.

When this was done Kubota Australia registered the name 'Kioti' legally and therefore they stopped Deadong from using the Kioti Brand.

And that's why we don't have Kioti dealers in Australia. That is the reason that these great tractors are called Daedong and not Kioti in both Australia and New Zealand.

Cheers.... Riccarda /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have yet to ever see the evidence of your statement that Daedong made components for Kubota. It has been denied by both companies many times, and all I've EVER seen is anecdotal evidence. If this relationship no longer exists, one would not see any evidence on parts boxes and stampings.
Sorry, I'm not buying it. As for Kubota registering Kioti as a brand in Australia, where might one go to see that registration record?

G'day again John,

Yeah.. it seems amazing.. and I will prove it by later doing a search (if allowable) on the Australian Names Registration list.

Shall we have a side wager on it? Say... you send me your local area T shirt (women's size 4 USA, I think or 34, Australian size 10) when I win.. and if I can't prove it.. (ha, and I will) I'll send you a genuine fair dinkum ridgie didge Aussie T shirt, just let me know your size. Deal?

Looking forward to my new T shirt...

...Cheers from Riccarda... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My dealer mentioned the Kubota-Kioti relationship when I was first looking at machines. He said that Kioti made some of the smaller tractors for Kubota in past years.

If it's not true, we need to post it on Snopes.com.

You may have misunderstood my reasons for wanting to know where to read the registration. I have no doubt that Kubota would register the Kioti name to keep them out of some countries, I just wanted to read it.
However, there is no good to be had in starting up the old Kioti/Kubota relationship, even if it ever did exist, which I doubt.
The truth is that at this time, there is no relationship, and each company can stand on their own merits as good tractor builders.
I understand that DingDong is the nickname for Daedongs in that area from other Aussie members who have posted that before. I think it's endearing acutally, rather affecionate.
Kioti would be a better name though in Australia and New Zealand.

Re: Kioti-Daedong and the Kubota influence\'

According to the Australian government the Kioti trademark is registered to Daedong Industrial Co., Ltd of Dalsung-Kun, Daegu REPUBLIC OF KOREA. The trademark registration number is 994169. The areas of registration include "Class: 12 Gasoline engines for land vehicles, diesel engines for land vehicles, agricultural tractors, trailers (transport implement)".

However...the registration was only approved in November of 2004 so there may have been some reason that kept them from applying for and using the name earlier.

Given all of this it seems that Daedong has the legal right to use the name in Australia...maybe there are contractual or branding reasons not to.

You can check it out here IP Website .

I can't comment on the Kubota/Daedong parts issue.

Regards,

Fred
