I'm looking at the new Kinetic log splitters out there. I heard they can cycle 10 times faster than the hydraulics. Which kinetics give the best bang for the buck? How are the imported woodmaxx splitters?

Back when I split wood I used a stand alone hydraulic splitter. It would have made no difference, in my case, if the splitter cycled 10 time or even 5 times faster. I couldn't cycle that fast. By the time I got any log split - then stacked the splits in the trailer - the splitter had cycled and I still hadn't moved a new round up to the splitter. However, it would probably speed things up if you had multiple helpers. All my trees here are Ponderosa pine and a big 'ol chunk with knots was a real chore for my 25 ton Didier splitter. Check the specs on any kinetic splitter carefully - you may be gaining speed but sacrificing splitting tonnage.

Kinetics are only faster if you have wood that's easier to split, put a big crotch or tough wood to split on one, and the fun begins.

At the "Sawmill EXPO" this year in Ohio, they had a "splitter", firewood processor competition,

There was a bam bam (Super Split) next to a hydraulic with a 4-way wedge, both had similar wood and a helper. The hydraulic got done with it's pile a fair amount faster than the bam bam. Why ?, because the wood they had there to split, had some tougher wood and some crotches.

Here's a pict. of how much wood the SS had left, when the Timber Wolf was done splitting,

I like Super Splits and the like, but it just isn't true that they are faster than the better hydraulic splitters, at least in the kind of wood I split.

BTW, the ONLY two brands of bam bams I'd even consider are Super Split and Split Second...

Thanks Rob for the info, I was expecting everyone to be pro-kinetic. I didn't know Supersplitter and the like would have trouble with hard to split wood. The public is led to believe otherwise.

I had something similar to that kinetic one like in the mid 70's. Personally, I liked it......85% of the time. They are right about it not liking tough splitting crotches or twisted grain wood. The ram would jam and fail to return to battery. There was a learning curve to learn to hit it several times without sticking the ram. I soon figured out to let that nasty looking stuff rest where it fell in the woods. My wood was all oak, hickory, cherry, pretty much straight grained wood.
It took me 15 years to figure out anthracite was soooo much easier to heat with.

Most of the kinetic splitter ads state that the splitters are the equivalent to 30 to 35 ton hydraulics.

I had the TSC Chinese kinetic spliter for a while my split fire with a 4 way is faster and safer.

The kinnetic likes to throw pieces back at the opperator if there are knots in the wood. They ride up the wedge and get propelled back.

It took a minimum of 3 splits to quarter a log with the kinetic whereas the splitfire does it in one

I also like the hydraulic log lift it makes a great table for smaller stuff

Interesting, it seems that the kinetic splitter lack the power hydraulic splitters have. That's not what the ads say. Anyone dispute this?

IF they did have as much power, you wouldn't have to bam bam the tough wood. lol

It really boils down to what kind of wood you have, if you have wood that should have went to a sawmill, then they work GREAT. BUT, if you have a lot of tough wood, they still work, they just work a lot slower.

I have a kinetic and love it. I sold my dual direction hydraulic splitter shortly after getting the Split Second. It amazes me how well it splits. It has split everything I have thrown at. Very rarely do I have to hit a piece twice. In 17.8 hours of use I have probably only had to hit 10 pieces more than once. A hydro splitter can't keep up with a kinetic.I can run over 5 hours off a gallon of gas. Look at the Split Second. It has many improvements over a Super Split. I have you any questions about let me know.

Here is a thread on another forum I have about my splitter, with several videos.
