Kama TS354C
Im trying to get some ideas on why my Kama TS354C wont rev to the max rpm(green area on the tach). It pulls to about 300 rpm short. I have adjusted the tach sensor, and I adjusted the valves. About all of them needing tightening a bit and I thought that would help. I have about 60hrs on it now. When I rev it, it also seems like it is missing while its accelerating to higher rpm, but once it gets there it runs very smooth. Any ideas on what to check are appreciated.

Is your air filter clean? Ehxaust restricted?
How is the oil level in your injection pump & governor?
Pump timing may be slightly retarded, or you could have a restricted injector - pop test the injectors for cc & spray pattern.
Check all low pressure fuel line connections for integrity, you could be sucking air.

I have changed my injector pump oil 2 times already. How do you pop test the injectors? It smokes black on hard acceleration but that is normal for a diesel I assume.

Diesels don't smoke much anymore, in fact, tier ll diesels don't smoke at all if they're running correctly.

Remove the air filter element (put the cannister back together) and try the acceleration test again.

Your symptoms indicate a lot of unburned fuel, usually caused by overloading of the engine (rack opened too far for the amount of available combustion air) or restricted air intake (same, dirty air filter), or worst case, late injector timing.

Did this happen all of a sudden?

Unless you have your own pop tester, you will have to take the injectors to your dealer.

Ok Bob, if all the small things check out ok should I adjust the rack or the timing first? It seems like its dumping in too much fuel on hard acceleration, but then smooths out once it gets to the rpm I want it at. Top end power feels ok but bottom end is sluggish. Thanks for your help

Not mentioned yet - but VERY germane - is the throttle linkage. Put the tranny in neutral and set the brake. Start the tractor and shove the hand throttle forward to the stop. Dismount the tractor and follow the throttle linkage to the governor. Try to move the linkage by hand. If you can get more RPMs that way, it's a simple matter of the throttle linkage being outa whack

The throttle was going all the way to the stop. I went ahead and cut the wire between the stop and the rack adjustment and adjusted the throttle stop just enough to gain about 100-200 rpm at wide open. Im about 100 shy of the green on the tach and im satisfied. I dont run my tractor wide open much anyway.

Thanks Greg, I spaced on the linkage.

If you are still getting smoke from the exhaust, the unburned fuel is washing down your cylinder walls and you still have issues with the timing or the pump & governor. These engines do not have an aeneroid valve to assist the rack, it is solely controlled by the flyweights, counterbalance spring/s and throttle stops. There is no direct connection between the linkage and the rack.
You may also have a dribbling injector, this would show up on a pop test.
Chect the pump timing first, then the rack setting. Run the engine between operations.

Is your air filter clean?

That still not right. The green mark on the tach is where you set your throttle when operating PTO implements. Mowing for example. Assuming your mower manufacturer recommends 540 PTO rpms, you put the PTO speed selector lever in the 540 position - then set the throttle so that the tach needle falls in the green zone.

So there's still more revs to be had from that engine, you just have to figure out how to find them. I'm going to where my own TS354C is located tomorrow, I'll open the throttle all the way and let you know how many revs to be looking for on yours. Mine is the 2006 EPA version of the Y485.

Hi Greg,

I thought you only had the 454. Did you just get the 354?
