I took the cover off and found one of the bolts came off on the bracket that aligns the knobs that engage the detents for 4H or 4L and Forward/reverse.

I got the bolt out with magnet, hooked everything back up and it still pops out of reverse. Stays in forward just fine. Ideas???

I also had that problem with the 4 wheel drive lever like Brad did. This was when I first got the tractor almost 2 years ago and did not repair it like Brad did. I made an aluminum bracket with a sliding pin to keep the lever in position.

Now I never have to worry about the ball plunger or detent problem anymore. However, for your foward/reverse lever, this would not be a good remedy. I keep my tractor in 4wd most of the time, not needing to move the lever frequently, so it works for me.

You should be able to feel the ball fall into the detent with a mild click. If not that can be the problem. I'm not following the bolt you are talking about, but it could also be that the shift fork is bent which would possibly stop the travel before the detent lines up with the ball to lock into position. Do you have the lever on the trans or the lever by the steering wheel (assuming the shuttle version and not the creeper version of the TS254C?)

The bad news is that on the TS series, the ball detent for reverse is under the steering rotary vavle at the base of the steering column, You can find a picture in the parts book on page 11. the ball is number 19 on the diagram. the flat spot on the mid connecting housing (front part of transmission) is where the steering assembly is bolted...

When you remove the cover that has forward and reverse along with 4wd and 2wd lever, it was the bolt on the under side that holds a bracket in place. I looked at some of the pictures on Robs post and I dont see anything in my stuff that has a spring or ball assembly.

The two knobs that move the reverse and 2wd-4wd shafts are in place. I can sometimes run for 2 seconds and it pops out of reverse and sometimes for an hour.

Not sure if that clears anything up or not.

Thanks

OK, I got you on the bolt. I have seen these put in backward and limiting the travel also. Try sliding (tapping or prying carefuly) the rod into reverse with the cover off and see if it will click into position. then see if the cover and lever can be engaged. If not some filing or adjustment of the guide plate may be necessary. if the travel does not allow the detent to engage, it will pop out of gear under a load.

Rob has a different tractor his is a KM series, made in same factory but a completely different design. The KM detent balls can be accessed when the cover is lifted. but on the TS they are further forward, under the steering machine. This will only be an issue if you cannto get the "click" in reverse after checking the travels.

I'm guessing the clutch needs to be pushed in to slide the shaft, right? Thanks for all your help.

It might help if the gears are not lined up. Usually these shift pretty easy between forward and reverse, there is enough of a bevel on the edge of the gears to alow smooth shifting. even if stopped. The idea is to see if something is mechanically limiting the travel of the shift rail (the rod) before it gets to the detent position. In other words, the gear may be partiall engaging and the lever may feel like it went all the way in but the gear may be only partially engaging and the rail may not be in detent postition. If so add a little torque and the gears will squeeze themselves away from each other and you are back in netural. A side note, operating the tractor in this way for a period of time could damage these gears.... and they are not fun to replace.

If I understand, there are definitely the spring loaded plunger-looking things under the steering box? I'm still not having much luck, so am about to get under the steering shaft.
