Got an estimate for a 4120 in Colfax, WA for $29,000, with all the bells and whistles. But what is this $1k destination charge and rollonrolloff charge? The estimate says they are giving me a $4,500 dscnt, off msrp I suppose?

Thanks,

Jeff

The destination charge is cash in the dealer's pocket, usually front left unless that pocket is already full from the last customer.
No one pays destination charges. What the charge really should be called is an upcharge. Dealers upcharge on hard to get models almost daring you to shop elsewhere. I always take the dare /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Almost always the models are only hard to get for them as there are plenty of others at other dealers. I'm surprised you don't have an "assembly charge". That's usually another money grab.

Oh yah, there's a $625 set-up charge. I'll buy used before I get gouged like this.

The key point here is not what they change for this and that, but what number is on the check you write. Do you care how they allocate the cost? Just run the calculator on the Deere site for the tractor and options you are buying and figure out when the discount off that is on the final, all things included (except tax) price. That's what counts.

That's not exactly true. Unlike automobiles the dealer price does not include freight and setup. It is NOT an upcharge. Some dealers just work it into the deal and others show it on the invoice. The reason it is shown on the invoice is because most dealers operate the sales independent from the shop. The shop is responsible for the setup. Whatever it takes shop to get the tractor ready to sell is what they charge the sales dept.

They are not made-up charges. The dealer pays them but some show it on the customer side and some don't. If you're getting a $4500 discount they are taking it off on the sales side but still showing it for accounting purposes. Look at your complete deal to see where you are. It's just like a car deal, what's the bottom line not how they got there. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I got three prices from three dealers with no whipsawing (at first) and never seen a single line item charge for either. What you're saying makes sense but around here it must be a mutual understanding when quoting to add it in rather than itemize.
Agreed though, it's the bottom line that matters.

Jeff,

I've not paid for delivery or set-up on either of the Deere's or implements I've bought in the past 2 years. My dealer flat out told me that JD corporate picks up this charge, and, if he has to trade for a specific tractor or implement with another JD dealer JD will pick up that freight charge as well. Even if it's across the country. That's here in VT , regional business practices in your area may differ but I wouldn't think so on something like shipping and handling.

Good luck, -Norm

When I signed the purchase order for my new JD, there was nothing itemized outside of the tractor and equipment except for the sales tax figure. My salesguy told me verbally that setup and delivery were included as part of the total price.

As I had done business with him before, I could expect him to be honest and not tack on any additional costs when I finally took possession of the machine.

Going to pass along something that happened to me back in 2000...we bought a new Yukon XL through the GM employee purchase plan. The dealership's business manager added a $40 document preparation fee onto the bottom line although the GM rules clearly stated NO DOCUMENT PREP FEES COULD BE CHARGED on such a purchase. I pointed out the regulation and asked for a refund. Not getting one, I sent a registered letter to GM headquarters. A month later, several people from the dealership were fired when it was discovered they had been charging the $40 on hundreds of employee vehicle purchases.
And yes, I got my $40 refund.

I don't think this is right. If anything is absorbed, it is done at the Dealership level. Like several have said in the previous posts, it really doesn't make any difference. The bottom line (or delivered price) is what counts. If you feel as though you have made an acceptable deal, you probably have! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think Cowboydoc has given the best explanation; some dealers may itemize the different charges while others just give you a total number (different bookkeeping and accounting methods is all). And like he, and others said, the bottom line is all I'd be concerned with.
