Just bought My Neighbors Old Tractor

Here is a photo of him on it last year. Got the tractor a brush hog and rear blade for 3k. My question is should I install a ROPS to the old machine and where would you recommend I get it?

Oh it's a 1972 JD 820 diesel made in Germany.

If your "new" tractor runs as as good as it looks, you got a real bargain. Congratulations.

I would pony up for the ROPS -- better safe than sorry. Check ROPS Guide for suppliers.

Edit -- At one time, some organizations (states?) had programs that provided financial assistance for the retro fitting of ROPS to older tractors. I don't know whether any of these programs still exist.

That was a great deal! I wouldn't install a ROPS on it.

Do you plan on installing a loader? or working on hill? If not I wouldn't worry about a ROPS

That was a great deal. In North Carolina, the Farm Bureau will reimburse you if you put a New ROPS of your tractor. That is, if the tractor never had a ROPS before. Check with your State Farm Bureau, and find out if this program is available in your state. You must be a member. The annual dues in NC is $25.00.

I think you did great on that deal. I sold my 820 this summer for about $6000, with a rops on it. Bought the rops and canopy in 2005 for about $1700 from Deere parts.

I would try the JD dealer first. May not longer be available. They had two versions, one for 28" and smaller tires and one for 30" and larger tires. If you add a ROPS, also add a seat belt.

good looking tractor. are you working hills in WV? if yes then get a ROPS if not wouldn't bother
