Was reading postings earlier about putting PT in tow mode and had a thought. I wonder if i can do this in the winter months to make the cold starts easier on my engine and starter. When the pump is set to bypass does it relieve the pressure from the pump making it easier to turn over? And would it hurt anything by starting this way. Your thoughts and input are appreciated.

I believe it just puts the wheel motor side of the drive circuit in a open loop.
When starting, the pump will still be rotating. No oil should move if tram is in neutral.

@m5040 I would agree with the first sentence, but the second neglects the PTO and auxiliary pumps which will certainly pump, pressurize, and move oil.

@Tchamp to answer your question, bypassing the drive (variable volume) pump doesn't really solve the problem of the starter on the engine having to move pumps and oil, as well as the engine.

I suppose if you really wanted to, there are things like pony motors, larger starter motors, pump/oil/engine heaters, or, even, gasp, a clutch system. On the other hand, the starter seems to work most all of the time as is...;)

FWIW: I did bump up the power (kW) of the starter on my Deutz, after the original starter died, and the aftermarket, more powerful starter has lasted more than twice as long as the original.

All the best,

Peter

Sorry, I misunderstood his statement on putting the PT in tow mode to assist with starting and thought we were only talking about that one hydraulic circuit.

No worries!

I wonder if i could find a starter with more torque for this Subaru that i currently have. I am doubtful but i may go to a rebuild shop and see if they can cross it to a larger one. Its worth a try anyways.

My 018 stays in a unheated garage, but I have no problems starting it. Are you sure your battery is good with good clean connections?

Yes you have a lot of great extra battery and electric improvements. My tractor is all stock.
Maybe the brushes in you starter motor are worn? When it is out it is easy to look for your high torque version.

I know it's an old thread, but there is (or at least was) a heavy-duty starter for the 25hp Robin. It made a noticeable but not dramatic improvement in cold weather starting. That was probably 15 years ago, so I couldn't say what the part number was.
