Well, after living with a dial-up connection to the internet for the last 12 years, and being on the receiving end of many "real soon now" failed promises by a handfull of providers, I finally have high speed wireless at the farm. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have moved from rural phone lines at max 22-24 kbps all the way to a 3Mb up and down 5.8 Ghz connection.

I love it!!

Congratulations Dave. Now you can waste time on the internet faster than you ever could before.

Congratulations! I figured out the topic as soon as I read your title.

What kind of service did you get? Sounds really fast.

I had a house phone when I moved in. Thought DSL was available but it wasn't. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Called Time Warner Cable and asked how much to run cable to the house. 650 feet back was 5 grand. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Asked if I could do it myself. They said sure. Rented a ditch digger and installed Roadrunner for 34.95 a month and turned the house phone off at 50 a month. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

650' doesn't even get to the end of my driveway. I have no idea where the nearest cable termination is, but it is more than likely several miles away. My wireless connection is $50 per month, but after dropping the dial-up connection, and the second phone line, it will probably be a wash on the monthly price.

Congrats Dave!!

Is that DSL?

I'm about to get off 22 -26k dial up connection. I can finally get cable and a cable modem. Whooo hooo!

They install on the 22nd of this month. Like you once I drop my 2nd phone line and the dial up connection ISP it only costs about 15 bucks extra a month (not including the required basic cable feed). But still I'm excited like it was xmas or something. The wife just shakes her head ...can't imagine why I'd be so excited about it. She just doesn't understand.

They did say they'd provide a 56k cable modem to me for 3 bucks a month. That didn't sound right to me and i questioned the speed, but the person I was talking to knew nothing about cable modem connections, so I didn't get far. Shouldn't a cable modem be more than 56k? Any recommendations for a cable modem? Once I'm set up I figure I'll buy one and get out of the 3 buck a month charge.

Nothing absolutely sure yet, but it appears that we'll probably be moving the end of next month. We currently have Verizon telephone and Comcast cable TV and broadband Internet service. The new location will CenturyTel phone service and, of course, they'd like to sell me DSL Internet access. The cable TV will be Charter Communications, and they'd like to sell me broadband Internet access.

Anybody know which is best? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Cable is much faster than DSL for downloading things from the internet.

The ONLY point where DSL is faster is uploading things (such as pictures) to the internet, and ONLY when compared to the slowest/cheapest cable plan...

Reliability and downtime of each service varies widely based upon the specific location...

Here's a place to find what's available, and compare the plans and services:

Depends where you are. At my last house, the DSL I had from Verizon easily beat the cable I had previously from Adelphia.

Of course, I could hit the Verizon switching office with a rock from my place, so I suspect that had something to do with it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey, you guys who are dropping your regular phone line - just remember that you don't always have normal 911 capability with a cable phone. Be sure to check with your provider, dont expect customer service to know what they're talking about, and make sure you understand the ramifications.

When I say you don't have normal 911 service, I mean it can range from "they won't know where you're calling from" to "you CANNOT connect to 911 service". As in, you will not reach ANYONE by dialing 911.

Make sure you know what you're getting into.

Know your local dispatch number! Post it by the 'phone'!
