The ONLY thing I've ever found that will kill Johnson grass is heavy and repeated applications of Round Up. And that will nuke your desireable grass as well. It's tough stuff to eliminate.

I agree with the Round Up comment. I've tried other chemicals with lousy results. Nuking Johnson Grass is best. I use a wick wiper (using Round Up) every spring. JG greens up much sooner than Coastal (Tifton 85 in my case), so that's the best time to hit it and I don't have problems with tire tracking. I may have to make a couple of runs a few weeks apart to make sure I get them all, but it seems like I'm staying ahead (You never know with JG). Once I start cutting hay, any JG that is left (or sprouts from seed) never gets tall enough to hit with the wiper, its minimal anyway.

I bought mine as just the wicks and tubes (2-5' sections), had to assemble it, and build a frame to hold it. The frame was more effort than was needed but I wanted to see that I was keeping it off the other grass. Now I just hook it to my FEL and charge away. Doing it in the spring and forgetting about it after that makes all the difference.

I can't remember where I bought mine, but here is a good place to start if you're interested: Rodgers Sales Co., INC .

I use a wiper with round up and my longhorns. Longhorns do a good job of cleaning it up.

There is a chemical that kills johnson grass without killing bermuda. I will try to find the name of it. It is rather expensive, but oh well.

I am using a grassworks 3 point unit:

GrassWorks Weed Wiper LLC : The New System for Weed Control

Maverick or Outrider herbicide or any other containing sulfosulferon.

One of them had a supplemental label out for pastures and hay fields last year. They are also sold as Certanty turf herbicide.

They do a great job on weeds, I use the Certanty on yards I spray and it really cleans them up. I am about to hit the Johnson grass on my Cheyanne bermuda this fall as the seedlings mature. They get allot more weeds than are on the label. They leave behind some really clean bermuda.

Wicking with Roundup would be allot cheaper, but with Maverick, you have to worry about dripping on the fields.

If I remember correctly you use 1.33 oz per acre and a bottle runs about $325 for 20 ounces.

May try the round up next year it should be up before the coastal. But the Maverick sounds best for now.Do you mix it with water . With all the rain this year I have all kinds of stuff in my coastal.I can spray it with my sprayer

That ought to work.

Just make sure you know how many gallons per acre you are putting out. Mavrick is expensive, you don't want to over or you will be wasting some $.

Don't under apply because you will not be pleased with the results.

Make sure you use surfactant, and use it at the middle of the road amount per the lable or the high rate per the label. This goes a long way towards making the spay work. Want even better results, apply your spray at a higher gallons per acre, (with the proper amount of active ingredient per acre). More water per acre helps get a better coverage, in turf I apply up to 200 gallons per acre, that gets a little old, but it works great and no burn.

Pastures I have been going at 40 gallons per acre, allot more refills, but I have been happy with the results.

You can use just water or you can add some liquid, or soulable fertilizer to go with it.

Just some suggestions, your milage may vary.

So I can put it in my Nitrogen when I put it out . I put about 100 to 150 pounds per acre.

It will work with the nitronen, just a hint, put the Mavrick in an old chemical jug and dissolve in water before adding to the tank.
