Hey Guys,
Bought a log splitter with a bad motor off a friend (burnt as much oil as fuel pretty much)...I had a replacement used motor I picked up at a local swap meet for small engines. When I went to change the motor out, I noticed two things, 1) Someone was in there before me because it had a Love-Joy coupler in it that the center rubber spider was missing out of it so it was just slapping the sh*t out of the coupler teeth together wearing them down to nothing. and 2) was that the Hydraulic pump was leaking fluid out of where the shaft comes out.

I would like to possibly rebuild the pump before putting the new motor, love-joy coupler, and pump back together but I cannot seem to find any info on this brand of Hydraulic pump.

Tag on pump reads:
JOHN S. BARNES CORP.
ROCKFORD, IL
10291
1002167

Thanks

Rebuild kits are not available because the cost to rebuild by a hydraulic shop; at $50 an hour with a 2 hour minimum plus parts; would exceed the cost of a new pump. A new pump can be found online starting at about $100 depending on size.

oh darn....now if I were to possibly pull the 8 or so star headed bolts out of the pump and pulled it apart, do you think I would find an O-ring on the shaft I could replace to stop the oil from leaking? It leaks a decent puddle of oil in the garage when not in use....Just trying to keep the cost down to get up and running...my women already isnt happy with me bringing it home, it needing loads of money wouldnt go over well either.

Thank you! That really helps. I appreciate it!

Monster,
The shaft seal should be removable without dismantling the pump. It may be a standard lip type seal or an O-ring. I suspect it is a standard lip type seal.

Does the pump drive shaft have play in it from side to side or up and down? If yes then the pump bearings have been worn or damaged possibly do the the rubber spider missing or the coupling being misaligned. Replacing the shaft seal in this case probably won't stop the leak for long.

Small Barnes pumps are indeed inexpensive.

If you want to try replacing only the shaft seal(s) as OLDnSLOW suggests, you can buy generics.
This photo shows what is in a pump rebuild kit for a gear-rotor pump, with the shaft seals noted.
This kit, by the way, is for a tractor implement pump, and it cost more than small Barnes
pumps cost entirely.
