John Deere x485
I've got a 2004 JD x485 with 523hrs. I was mowing tall grass over this past weekend and over heated the tractor. Looked down and saw the temp gauge pegged in the red. I shut it down quickly and let it cool down for several hours, cleaned all the screens and radiator off.

However now when I start the tractor, the fuel pump seems to shut off after the tractor runs for 3-4 minutes. Can't get it to engage again without waiting another 10 minutes. A shot of starting fluid down the throat gets it to fire but not run. After about 10 minutes of waiting I can once again hear the fuel pump kick in and am able to start the tractor. While the tractor runs i do get a code on the EFI light of 2 long and 2 short flashes before it shuts down again. To me it does look like the pump is going bad, but a new one is like $300.00 and I'd rather be sure before I buy a new one at that price.

Any diagnostics that I can do to test this out perhaps or could there be some sensor going out that's shutting off the fuel pump?

In scanning through the service manual TM2023 it talks about checking the fuel pressure to see if the pressure regulator and or fuel pump are operating correctly. Also talks about the fuel injector module. Could possibly also be other sensors involved. You may be money ahead to purchase the manual to help diagnose your problem.

There are three sensors for the EFI
Air temp, flash code: L S S
Coolant temp, flash code: L S S S
Vacuum/pressure, flash code L L S

Flash code: L L S S = EFI air/fuel calculation error. Tech Manual says to reset, stop engine wait for fault light to go off and fuel pump to stop, then restart engine. I assume do this BEFORE the engine stops during the 3-4 minutes it runs.

I would try disconnecting the battery, then reconnect to see if system "reboots"

Double check what fault code you have.

My guesses are fuel regulator, vacuum/pressure sensor, or EFI module.

I would NOT have shutdown for overheating. I would have removed load, both PTO and Movement (travel) idled down, cleaned screens and see if temp dropped. If it would not drop in temp after a few minutes THEN shutdown. To immediately shutdown causes the heat to just build with no place to go.
