I am planning to buy my first riding mower and at the moment the John Deere X370 is the leading contender. This has the 42 inch Accel Deep deck.

Will this mower, with the deck attached, fit into a standard (4x8) pickup bed?

The specs say width with mower 50.5
and width with mower (deflector raised for storage) also 50.5

Is that second measurement a typo?

Can the deflector be easily removed?

Well I don't have a x370 but My John Deere LA135 with 42 inch deck easily fit in the back of my 6 ft bed truck. The deflector just rotates up, and the deck is about 42 inches. Hope this helps. perhaps someone will come along with and actual x370 and a tape measure.:)

I've no idea what a "standard" pickup bed is anymore.. back in the day, was a no-brainer :D
Now with crew cabs, extended beds, etc, etc. don't know if a 4x8 sheet of plywood will drop in between the wheel wells or not.

With some the deflector can be tied up with a string.
But I would strongly suggest you get a small trailer with a full ramp to move the mower.

I loaded a 48" mower onto an 71 Chev PU bed for a long time hauling it partially on the tailgate.
I built what I thought was some nice ramps and I thought it was no problem.
But one day backing off the right ramp slipped off the tailgate and the mower fell. :irked:
It cost me over $700 to replace the hood, grill & misc parts.
And I was lucky just to have skinned places & bruises, without any broken bones.
When this happened I went straight & bought me a utility trailer.

Just something with a ramp that CAN NOT move.

It must come with age, maybe wisdom.

I used to haul my X740 around using fairly heavy duty ramps but one time the weight on the back of the trailer made the ball unhook and straight down I went. I just crushed the ramps. I fixed everything up and have used them to get onto a fairly high trailer since then but now am too nervous to even run it up the ramps onto a trailer that is 3 feet off the ground. I can just picture the ramps sliding and me underneath the beast. Nothing happened that would make a nice fail video,

I have quite a few times run a JD110, and older style, onto the 4x4 truck with ramps and it fit nice, but I was always very very cautious and hated it. I finally quite the process and won't take the X740 anywhere unless I have a full wide ramp.

One problem is the mower deck hanging up going over the top of the ramps and won't unhook. Then you are sitting on the tractor trying to unhook it while spinning the tires trying to drive it over.

One time I was backing a GT with tiller off the truck that was backer up to a berm. I still had to use ramps. Everything was good until the ramps slid off the back of the truck tailgate. The rear wheels were on the ground and no ramps and thew tractor wheels were on the tailgate yet. The tractor had front weights on but I figured if I just go wide open backwards the weights would clear the tailgate because of the speed and momentum. What happened was as soon as the tires cleared the truck the front on the tractor fell like a rock and the weights made a u shaped tailgate for me.

Get a tilt trailer or some wide ramps, or be very cautious.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I have been think about the hazards.

Another option is to build a rock+earth ramp. We have plenty of room and it would be a good use for some of the rocks we have pulled out of the pasture over the years.

The only reason for wanting to truck the mower anywhere is if it needed to go to the dealer for any servicing that I am not able to perform - perish the thought. I need to check with the dealer and see if they have a safe way to unload from a pickup bed.

Most dealers can load a rider in the back of a truck without a problem. A box store could be hit or miss but a real dealer will be set for almost any situation. I would have no problem loading it into the back of a truck (or unloading it) but I would make sure the ramps have great traction. Nothing like sliding down a 2x10 as you are trying to unload it. I had two pressure treated ramps that I put aluminum u-channel on the edges and painted the surface with the sand mixture to make it really grippy. I also had a metal end that would allow the board to butt up against the tailgate and straps to keep them from sliding. Now I have a 4x6 trailer.

I have moved my x749 in the back of my service truck which has a narrow bed that is 54" wide with straight sides. Used the tommy gate to fold over a berm to load and unload, easier than pulling a trailer in deep snow.
