John Deere x300
When I engage the PTO switch on my x300, I can hear a "click" and the same "click" can be heard when I disengage the switch. Although it is clicking, it is not engaging the clutch to power the blades. This clicking sound would seem to indicate their is power to the clutch. What would you suggest I look for as the source/solution to this issue?

Welcome to TBN J.

I see that the X300 was made for quite a few years. (2006 - 2015 Select X300 Series) Can you tell us what year your tractor was manufactured?

Have you checked the belt? The PTO is electromagnetic, it's either on or off. It doesn't really do much else. If the belt is intact, it may be worn and loose enough to slip around the PTO pulley.

There are a couple of safety switches involved also, but I don't think the PTO would click if it was one of those.

It's a 2009 model.

Did this issue just pop up out of the blue?

When was the last time it worked?

We were cutting grass on Monday afternoon, hit a rock with the mowing deck and the belt popped off. That is the 2nd time the belt has popped off this year (everyone is now grounded from using my mower). I replaced the belt and then the clutch would not engage the blades.

OK, again, check the belt. Make sure you have it on right and didn't miss an idler pulley. Also check the deck itself for damage. Do both spindles rotate easily?

I removed the deck to replace the belt and to check the blades, pulleys, etc. Everything moves easily, no damage. The belt is back on the spindles and the idler pulley correctly.

If it is still not working, verify that you have good voltage and ground. It could be the clutch is worn or maybe just an air gap adjustment.

I think tom is on the right track.

Also check the PTO electrical connector. I assume that you had to disconnect it to replace the belt. Make sure that the connector is firmly mated and that none of the connector pins have backed out.
