John Deere 790
I replaced the battery, have 12 volts at my starter, but my JD 790 won't start. Light won't even light up. So with no dash lights, no indication there is even any electric making it to instrument panel, what can I try. Also. Fuel and temp guage doesn't work but I had dash lights for other items. (when it would light up) Thanks, first post.

Check battery both ground cable connections

Sounds like a bad ground connection

I used my voltage meter and have 12.66 at the starter (where my positive cable from the battery goes to) Replaced the ground cable with the new battery. So would I get that if it wasn't grounded?

Meter clip could have good ground, but battery cable not. Try jumper cables direct to solenoid and good ground. I'm guessing poor cable connections.

Transmission in neutral, pto(s) off, seat safety switch enabled, (Operator on seat or switch pulled up). Check to see if headlights dim. Fuel solenoid click. Turn key clockwise.

Late father-in-law told me MOST problems with electrical are lack of grounding. Based on your comment I took the new ground cable, and unbolted (bolt was nice and clean, not corroded or rusted, and sanded both side of hole it bolts through. That was it. I should have done it yesterday. Bugged me so much at 14 degrees with an ice storm blowing in I went out and checked it this morning. THANKS ALL.

Re: John Deere instrument panel not working

Now, If anyone can tell me based on expericence. Fuel gauge, temp gauge, hour meter don't work on this tractor I bought. Dash lights in instrument panel do. Panel appears to be one unit. MAN I hope it's not the panel. THoughts? What to check. I can add diesel and see if the Ohms changes to see if the gauge works. Any other suggestions on what to trouble shoot for. LOT's of dirt dabber nest in the wiring under dash area, so I'm going to go through and clean connection. However they are sealed and as dirty as it is, I don't think that's the problem. Yes, I'll look for chewed wires from Mice.
