If anybody has any questions about John Deere Tractor Resale - it is VERY good. I went to an estate auction this weekend to bid on some stuff.

2003 5103 with 400 hours went for $13,750
2008 6430 with 40 hours went for $50,500
2005 7220 with loader and 2900 hours went for $51,500
2003 MX-6 - $1600

I wanted the 5103 and MX6, but not for those prices.

What would each of those cost new?

Was the 6430 and the 7220 4WD?

5103 was $14,500 new.

I can buy a 6430 in the same config form my dealer for $51K

Both were 4wd.

I didn't not check on the 7220 pricing. I thought the 7220 seemed like a fair price, but the tires were somewhat ate up.

Was the 6430 a Premium Model?

I think you should be able to score a new MX6 for around $2200. that's what I paid for mine anyways. now, I am sure there was certain factors that helped me get that price. 1) I initially wanted a Bush Hog 296 but Deere changed up their financing rules and you had to finance non-Deere equipment seperatley meaning I wouldn't have been able to finance it with the 0% package at the time I bought my tractor. 2) my dealer had a few on his lot that I think he was itching to move at the time. there was no paint fade or rust spots, so they hadn't been sitting there too long. 3) maybe he was feeling nice that day and decided to cut me a break on the price(that's what I keep telling myself):D

as for an example of John Deere's holding their value. I had a 1978 950, 2wd, non power steering with 1,157 hours on it. good condition. cost was around $5500 new back in '78. dealer offered me $4,500 trade-in value and I jumped all over it. I probably could have sold it for more, but I avoided the aggrivation of all that. I figured I got my use out of it for many years, it was 30yrs old and only lost $1,000 depreciation. I could live with that! btw, it sold after only sitting on his lot for 2 weeks.

$2200 seems rather low. Is that with a clutch and chains front and rear?

Smoking deal on the resale,

yep, that was chains front and rear, the whole 9 yards. all of the MX mowers come standard with a slip clutch. from my experience, most of the medium duty mowers on the market come with them standard. light duty mowers appear to give you the option of with or without. when i asked if that price included chains, my dealer told me that Deere puts safety chains on all medium and heavy duty models, it's not an option apparently. with Bush Hog it was an option as the 296 I wanted came with a rubber pad. I still can't figure out where my dealer made his money on my sale. the tractor price was $19,500 and that was with the joystick and mid remotes and one rear remote, the MX6 was $2200, and I got an excellent trade in price with 0% for 48 months to boot!

When I bought my MX-6 it was missing the rear chains. I never thought about it. It is interesting on the MX-6 what is standard but can be deleted.

I will have to call around for pricing on a MX-6.

You got a smoking deal,

$14,500 does not sound right for a new JD 5103 with 4 wheel drive. I recently purchased a slightly used 5203 but was close to buying a 5103 and priced several.. The $14,500 sounds right for a 2 wheel drive but the 4WD option is around $4,000.

5103 was 2wd

Through the years I've attended quite a few auctions. I've watched people pay more then the retail price many times! Was glad to help the others save their money with new purchases vs the presumed auction values.

Thats not only for equipment but also for hand tools! I guess it's just all the excitement and the thoughts of a good deal rather then the reality!

When going to auctions it is best to get to know what real world values are before going!!!!!!

I have a quoted price on a MX5 for $2100 and the MX6 was $2400 from a local dealer. I've found the prices vary greatly between dealers, both on the tractors and equipment. It surely pays to shop around.

I could not agree more. John Deere AG equipment, with a few glaring exceptions, holds its value as well or better than any other AG equipment.

When I was debating on buying a new tractor, I test drove them a bunch of different brands: MF, NH, CIH, CAT, Zetor, Same, Kioti, etc...

My final decision came down to JD 5420 and NH TN75A due to value, features, quality and resale value. The JD won out due to that last item. Resale value. I watch auctions and dealer inventory like a hawk. JD 5420's are selling for as much and sometimes more than what I paid for it 4 years ago. You can not beat that with a stick! The NH TN75A's and CIH equivalents have depreciated 35-50% in that same time period. The Zetor, Mahindra, Kioti, and other brands (except Kubota) have depreciated 50-75%. In some cases they are all but giving them away. I can not comment to MF and Kubota because there just are not enough of them around this area (or maybe I am just color blind to red and orange).

I attribute the value of JD equipment to three things: reliability, availability of parts (seemingly forever) and dealer support network. You know it will work and if it doesn't you know that you can get it fixed. The exact same thing can be said of JD & CAT earthmoving equipment. I can still order parts for a 1940's CAT D4 and get it the next day! It may be a little more costly than a modern part, but cheaper than buying a new machine.

Ask anybody who purchased a Belarus how it feels when a part breaks and no spare parts are available. Then you will see the value of the JD system.

Looking at the depreciation numbers can be eye opening.

Like a JD 4440 that was bought new for $34k in '83 and sold at auction for $58k recently.
