Good evening Gentlemen: Anyone out there have a solid John Deere Model 530 for sale (1959 year model)?
I'll probably sell mine someday, but nowhere near done with it yet. It's just too useful around the property. But I like to talk about the 530 and hope you get one. They are a wonderful tractor. IMHO, the 530 was the pinnacle of two cylinder development. Some really nice features are the independent PTO, the smooth running engine, 12v electrics, power steering, lots of hydraulic flow and pressure, the suspended seat ....and most of all, the 530 has one of the best three points it's ever been my pleasure to use.
The big old flat top fenders are more than wide enough and strong enough to stand on.
As you go looking at 530s be sure to check the intake manifold around the carb for cracks. I've seen several with cracks in the cast iron part there. Other than that - and some of the least reliable brakes I've ever seen...there just aren't any problems with this tractor. It's probably the most reliable piece of machinery I've ever owned - and that list includes a '50 GMC. Now that we have the bigger Kubota, sometimes the JD will sit for a year, but it fires right up all ready to work.
Ours did become much more useful - and way less dangerous - after swapping the tricycle front for a wide front. BTW, that's an easy conversion....it bolts right up. Before adding the wide front, ruts or rocks would pick up the front of the tractor all too easily - tho' maybe there's some other solution that I don't know about. The wide front enabled us to add a JD #46 quick detachable loader that can use several different buckets.
Someone told me that JD continued to make 530s in south america for years after they quit making them in the US. I don't know if that's real, but if so it might be a source for old tractors and parts.
