I have a john deere m that over heats. had water in oil . changed head gasket and oil and filter. put on new radiator.no more water in oil but still over heats.any ideas?
If I remember correctly the M's don't have a water pump. Thermo-Syphon cooling I think is what they call it. I had an M. Things like a pressure cap not working properly or just a little bit of chaff in the radiator would cause it to heat up. Engine timing was important also. Thermo-Syphon cooling works very well when everything is spot on. But it doesn't take much of a variable to make them overheat. I never over heated it from work or a load. Just from the conditions I described above.
thankyou for your advice. with new radiator and fluids mite be air lock.radiator did not come with new cap just threw one i had.did noticed over flow leaked. could be problem.tractor starts and runs so good i dont think its timeing. will check.
I think I remember reading in Green Magazine that they need to have the antifreeze mixed and then poured in. You cannot pour in pure antifreeze and then add water. It needs to be mixed before it is put in tractor. Hope it helps.
Explain what it is doing when it is overheating. Is steam actually coming out the radiator? Did it just puke a little coolant out the overflow? Or is the gauge showing hot?
JD Ms run pretty hot by the temperature gauge. The sender is right on the heat and seems to be in a hot spot. My MT runs at 220 degrees all the time but it is not overheating.
If you overfilled the radiator any at all it will spit coolant out the overflow. It will find its own level eventually and will probably be 2-3 inches below the top of the neck when it is cold. That is normal.
If it is shooting a geyser of steam and water out the radiator, then it is really overheating and you can try some of the fixes mentioned above.
