I just put a new sump gasket and crank oil seal on a briggs 20 ho intek. after I put the engine back together when I start it it goes straight to full throttle//speed and will not idle down with throttle adjustment. i have gone thru the steps of setting the govenor base idle several times and nothing works,,,it always runs at full throttle. when i re-assembled the two parts of the engine did I do something to mess up the govenor on the inside? I need some help and insight if anybody has it to share.
Thank you
kdendy

What are the steps for setting the governor that you used?
Did you have the engine upside down when you pulled the sump off?
Did any of the governor parts come off with the sump?
I don't have a repair manual but a video on the net looked like it was possible to come off.
Are there any alignment marks on the governor gear pieces?

I may be doing the same tear down very soon as I have/had an oil leak dripping on the floor after use.
In fact, I have the gasket and seal. Mine has 900 hours on it and I thought it was the seal. When I called JD parts the guy said the seals
usually don't leak but the gaskets do. I ordered both as the old seal may get messed up and being 10 years old with 900 hours I would not want to have to take the engine out again.
I cleaned everything up and did find a loose sump bolt on the left side just to the front of the oil filter.after tightening it, in place, with a 13mm wrench which was a little loose fit but the closest, it has not leaked any oil after 3 hours of hard work.

I could not be that lucky:laughing::laughing: so anticipate using the parts sooner or later.

Did you use any gasket sealer on your new gasket?

Mine came dry and the parts guy was surprised that there was not a little pouch of sealer in the envelope.

Did you learn any tricks or shortcuts for pulling the engine and putting it back on the tractor?

As the parts guy said, "that's the hard part."

I did have the engine almost upside down at one point. Yes I did use some blue gasget sealer((just a very light skin)). I wasn't smart enough to look for timing marks~?? The steps for setting the governor were told to me to be; loosen throttle cable nut. loosen governor rod clamp. Set throttle to full throttle, turn rod clockwisetil it stops,, clamp down nut to throttle. I found taking the engine off the frame was very easy, I did end up making some 2x4 blocking to hold the engine as secure as possible. As you can see I probably will be taking it apart again so I should be even better at it soon enough?!

Oh, no governor parts came off during disassembly.

Loosen the nut on the governor arm, and while moving the governor arm to open the mower up to full throttle look what direction the shaft turns. Then when holding the throttle at full throttle turn the governor shaft within the arm in the same direction that the governor arm moved to open the throttle, until it stops then tighten the nut back down, Make sure the nut is good and snug, I have seen more than one slip when the engine is started.

tried every configuration,,split it open~behold, the governor was in 3 pieces waiting for me to pick up out of the remaining oil. The first time I started the engine after putting it back together it ran at the correct throttle for about 4 seconds, then it sputtured like it might stall,,then(and since then) it took off like a bat aout of ****! I have been dinkin around trying to tune something that was never gonna be tuned. So the clock quit 2 yrs ago at 807 hrs., It's due for something to be fixed since it has never missed a beatin all these years. I learned a few things along the way.1, slow down. 2 read SOMETHING on the subject first. Thanks for sharing all the wisdom

I looked at the videos I made reference too last night, today. It takes about 3 of them to put it all together and some are not the 20 hp model but they all work about the same. One of them refers and shows a new governor. The guy said it only cost $10 and was referring to a flattening on one of the weight tabs. It looked to me as if there were more changes on the one he bought than what he described, so be sure to get the right one.

In another video, for a Craftsman mower, with the Intek engine, the guy showed that the rod that is pushed into the casting for the governor to turn on had been worn by the flat washer and locked up. He subsequently got the rod out and smoothed it down, claiming the tolerance was a little tight to begin with. He then epoxied the shaft back in, put the new governor on and it ran fine.

You know everything on the net has to be taken with a grain of salt, but the videos were pretty good as a group.
There is one that shows the adjustment of the arm on the outside and it was just like the mechanic described last night.

Good luck.
Keep the thread open and let us know how everything turns out..

One more question... Did you put any blue stuff around the outer edge of the new seal before you installed it?
