John Deere Fuel Cap Repair

Getting tired of buying $18.00 replacement fuel caps for my 318 when the plastic clouds over ... or fractures. Has anyone successfully replaced the plastic?

I seem to remember somebody using a jelly jar bottom.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Should I just suck it up and re-order again?
