I submitted a thread earlier and got some great responses. I thought I had the problem fixed, but was wrong.
I have a z445 zero turn with the Kawasaki 25HP engine. The mower is a 2009 model with 70 hours on it. All maintenance has been performed on schedule. This spring, I replaced the air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, and changed the oil.
Earlier this summer, the engine started surging while mowing. A few minutes later, it started bogging down in heavier grass (which never happens) and it actually died. It was really hard to re-start, and it did the same thing several times. The next week, it started doing the same thing as soon as I fired it up. After a few times, I would restart it and it would run great for half an hour or so, and then the same thing would start again.
I checked the fuel filter, checked the air filter, checked to make sure the gas cap vent wasn't plugged, and took the fuel tank off and replaced the gasoline. Everything looked great. Fired it up and had the same problems. My dad took off the foam prefilter, washed it out with water (it was full of dust), dried it out, put it back on, and fired the mower up. It ran great for the entire 2 acre mow. I thought the problem was solved.
The next week I went out and had the same problems all over again. This past weekend, I went ahead and replaced the air filter, fuel filter, and spark plugs for the second time this summer. Same problems. I can barely get it back to the garage because it keeps going dead and it takes forever to restart.
I can tell you this for sure: It is fouling out the plugs within minutes. The electrode is absolutely covered with black soot, so to my (limited) opinion, it appears to be a rich mixture. Also, it doesn't matter whether the blades are engaged or not.
Any ideas? Thanks for any help you can provide.
