My FIL just bought a new JD X390 with snowblower, cab and bagger and has a 2011 JD 160D with bagger and 42"deck. Machine always stored inside, 272 hours and really looks like new. It has had very good care and he wants $1000-$1200 for it. I would like a machine just for bagging. Most of my 5 acre mowing is done with a Grasshopper and Gravely zero turn mowers. Is this a reasonable price for the JD?

Offer him $1000, and see if he'll take it. ;)

Or just go buy yourself a new one... let him peddle the D160.

Last month I picked up a 2014 X324 (AWS) with a 48 inch deck power blower on the bagger. It had been traded in with 224 hours and was fully serviced. Dealer was only asking $2200 and quickly went to 2k for cash on a machine that had listed for nearly $5500 new. I don't usually get great deals on things painted Green. My assumption is a steep depreciation curve the first four years. I have seen a lot of older stuff that wasn't much cheaper. Had I not found the one I had I probably would have jumped on something like your FIL's machine. My Forest Gump style XRS 75 is 26 years old.

Thanks for the opinions. I am going to go look at it Saturday and see where it goes from there. He did send me some pictures and it really does look brand new. It has been cleaned off after every mowing and also has 3 sets of blades with it, one set brand new. New battery also even though the old one still worked fine, he thought it was a few years old so he replaced it.

bagging 5 acres will be a LOT of work with that mower!. 1 acre is like 12 bags. and you know that mower is not rated for anything near 5 acres.. I forgot the name of it, but a company makes a pull behind bagging attachment with an engine/blower so you can do larger properties like yours without needing to empty the bags as often on the estate of the mansion..

I just sold my 99 hour D160 for $1,600.

It was on the market for a full 4 hours, had I wanted to I could have held out for $1,800 I am sure.

With the higher hours I would consider $1,100 a fair price to pay if the machine was taken care of.

My one concern is the deck. The D160 comes with a 48" mowing deck, you say his has a 42"? Why does it not have the original deck?

I made my first post without reading the entire thread. $800 is an excellent price, congratulations on your new purchase!

I loved my D160, they're a great lawn tractor. Just keep it in mind that they're a lawn tractor, not a garden tractor. If you remember that than you will love it just as I loved mine!
