I'm in the process of fixing my 4300 diff lock and while it's torn down I'd like to knock the rust off and re-paint the back end (maybe the whole tractor if the back goes well). I see that there are 2 (or more) types of JD black paint available, gloss and Blitz Black.

John Deere Black Paint TY25631
John Deere Black Spray Paint TY25609

Thinking Blitz Black is what I need but figured I'd check here first?

I've used rattle cans for years, but now I own several paint guns that came in a toolbox I bought from a retired auto body guy so considering going that route. Is it best to get the JD reducer and hardener too? or other? I'll be selling the tractor in a few months so it's not something I'll be looking at for the next 20 years but willing to put in some work to make it look semi decent.

Thanks!
Ryan

Blitz Black is one step up from flat black in gloss. It is extremely popular with rat rod customizers as it gives an a non-gloss black with a bit of a sheen (kind of a satin black). If you are buying John Deere paint in quarts or gallons, you need both the hardener and reducer to make the paint easy to spray and a tougher surface.

The black on your tractor from the factory was Medium Gloss Black. The Blitz is near flat with no shine.

That is good to know.. looked on jdparts.com and guess I was surprised they didn't list the paints used.

I have a call in to the dealer. They carry the blitz and high gloss but not the medium gloss which is what they suspected but didn't know for sure. They are waiting for a call back from Deere to confirm and your post corroborates their suspicion, so that's good to know.

I may post up some pics later on...ended up stripping all the green parts off and pressure washed all the oil and grime. Once I get the diff fixed its on to rust removal and paint!

Thanks for the replies
