John deere 990 or 4005 vs massey Ferg 240

Trying to decide on getting rid of massey ferg 240 for a slightly smaller / newer jd 990/4005.
Massey ferg is old and doesn't have front end loader....990 seems to be slightly smaller and just a little less horse power but would have 4wd and front end loader.....
help me guys......think I can get couple year old JD for about 18k with loader and should be able to get 5k for 1986 massey.

I think the 4005 is a good tractor for the money, but it lacks the steel tranny and rear axle housings, that the 4x20 series has, it lacks the planetary final drives also.
I think it takes the 300cx loader, which is smaller than the 400cx and is not self leveling. But, there is a big price difference between the 4005 and the 4x20's
What do you use your tractor for, and what don't you like about the one you currently have?
The JD3038 looks like a nice simple, economical tractor also.

Steel tranny and rear axle housings???? Please explain.
never had a loader before so any will probably do most of what I would use for, yard work, moving small loads.
The massey is a little heavy.....would like 4wd with all the rain weve had and wanting front end loader....hate to put new loader on such an old tractor....1986 model.....I've always kind of liked green paint I guess........Use tractor to bush hog, disc harrow, plant 5 acres of corn and spray a 3 acre pasture.
Just a small little hobby farm I'd guess you'd say.......would like a little smaller tractor to be able to haul it to hunting acreage to bush hog and do food plots.

The 4x20 deeres (4120, 4320, 4520, 4720) and up, have all steel castings, whereas the smaller tractors are all alluminum back there. I can't really say that the alluminum is bad, I just feel better about steel. A 4x20 with a loader weighs in around 5-6K pounds.

My neighbor bought a 990 with fel and backhoe in good shape for $12,000 about 4 years ago. I use it occasionally helping him out, not too bad for the money. I would recommend you try out a hydrostatic transmission before buying your next tractor.
