John Deere 990
I have a 2004 JD 990. I am the second owner and have had it for about 13 years. I put about 2 hours a month on it mowing a 1 acre pasture and putting out (3) hay rolls every few weeks, it's total hours are 650+/_. About 7 years ago I had a mobile guy come out and replace something regarding the clutch, I want to say a pressure plate and throw out bearing? Fast forward to last week I started to notice that the transmission wasn't engaging until the clutch pedal was almost all the way up. I had it hauled to a local JD shop and it was able to get onto the trailer under it's own power but weakly.

The diagnostic summary reads "drive only engages in A range, on concrete, at idle, at the end of the clutch pedal range. In other ranges it would move but slip". This was my experience but I was able to get it to move in any gear range and it was more reliable in reverse. Furthermore they said "attempted to adjust clutch linkage however it appears to be at the end of it's adjustment" and "upon complete inspection anchor point for clutch pedal spring is almost rusted through". It's Florida...everything rusts.

The suggested solution is "split tractor, remove/replace clutch, throw out bearings and related components".

So far I am sorta of okay with the diagnostic summary, stuff breaks or wears out, but the estimated cost is almost $4,500.00 I feel is a little much when people I know are paying 1K less for larger, non JD tractors. I was able to get them to reissue an estimate that broke down the parts and the estimated hours to complete the job. I have few questions I hope some of you here might be able to answer.

1) Is $4K + a bit pricey for this job?
2) The estimated hours required is 17.5 hours at $105 per hour. Does this seem like alot of hours? It usally takes this shop to get your tractor back to you after 3 weeks have passed.
3) The clutch is priced at $1,744+, I am assuming this is direct from John Deere and sold as OEM, but wouldn't Yanmar parts also be considered OEM since my tractor has a Yanmar plate?. I see the same clutch offered from online sellers, as new aftermarket parts (though no aftermarket manufacturer name is listed in the ads) for a much as 1/3 the price. Is there a catch? Is there an issue buying New Aftermarket replacement for $500 +shipping? Is there an after market manufacturer that has a good reputation for quality parts?

I've already had a bad experience with this shop last July which could have cost me several hundred dollars more because they asked me if I wanted maintenance service on top of what I was having done, I said "I guess so but I only put about 50 hours on the tractor since it's last maintenance service" but with the caveat that I needed a new $ total first to determine if I really could afford it at that moment. The service manager forgot to call me back with a price and did the work without my approval. Imagine my surprise when they called me to tell me my tractor was ready but the bill was $600 more than the original $200. I ended up paying for the products and parts but not the service (which was most of the bill). Now I just feel like they are trying to squeeze some $ out of me knowing I have no tractor without the repair.

I have had a number of people recommend I take the tractor to another tractor shop I didn't realize was fairly close. They are a Kubota dealer but the service manager is willing to take a look at my tractor (they've never has a JD in their shop) to determine if it really is in need of a new clutch and do the repair so long as the difference between Kubota and JD clutches aren't too extreme. My luck JD requires soe crazy tool to remove one integeral part that they don't have because Murphy and his laws treat me that way often.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Much appreciated.

First I would like to welcome you to TBN and am sorry for your troubles.

I doubt the JD dealer is trying to get back at you for something in the past but one never knows. However, the fact that you feel that way, you most likely would not be satisfied with their work. Therefore, I would not consider them for this repair.

Not knowing the Kubota shop in your area, it is hard to say what they are capable of doing. I am sure they would take your money to confirm what you already know.

I am wondering why not call back the mobile service to replace your clutch? If he replaced the throw out bearing and pressure plate before, he knows how to replace the clutch and can split the tractor on site. Maybe he is no longer doing that type of work, but I am sure there is an independent shop or person that is capable of helping you out.

Good luck and I hope you get it going soon.

I don’t know anything about a 990 but based upon the general size of the tractor I can’t see it taking a pro 17 hours and can’t wrap my head around the clutch costing $1,700. I put a clutch in my 950 for a few hundred bucks. Can’t say what I had in the way of time as it was part of an engine overhaul. I would say 8-10 hours for these smaller tractors. Maybe I’m wrong though.

Is there another Deere dealer in your general area call them and ask for a price on replacing the clutch and related components on your 990.
If in same general area, labor cost should be similar And service data as for hours and parts should be the same from one deere dealer to another.

8-10 hours seems about right.
A friend helped me (I actually helped him) put a clutch in my Ford 1920, and we did it in 9 hours.
I had never done a clutch in anything before, he had the knowledge.

I would not go near ANY dealer.
I live in Florida.
Depending on where you are, you should certainly be able to find an independent shop that can do the work.....and for FAR less cost.
$4,500 is ABSURD !!!!

If you do have an independent shop do the work, buy an OEM clutch (or equivalent) on line.
Some Chinese import clutches can be poor quality.
How do I know this? (I did the same clutch twice)

Suggest calling All States Ag Parts (1-877-530-4430) for Deere 990 clutch kit, plus pilot and throw out bearings.
Parts cost will likely be way less than 1/2 the $1744 quoted by Deere dealer.

Thanks so far for all the responses.

I have had somewhat positive experiences with this shop in the past, it's just certain employees that ruin the confidence. Google reviews confirm its a certain individual. I believe in supporting local business and I know, owning my own service business that sometimes a lackluster employee gives the wrong impression.

Unfortunately there aren't any mobile repair folks in my area (at least I've not been able to get any recommendations) there's just not enough work for them here. The mobile guy I used years ago is no longer around or has gone back to working for someone else.

I have a call into a different JD dealer. This guy confirms the 17 to 20 hour time for many JD models, but perhaps not as many for my "smaller" model, but he did agree, no hemming and hawing, "absolutely", that I could go with an after market clutch from another manufacturer that is "recognized" (as suggest All States Ag) by JD for around $800. This guy also offered, without prompting, that the seals should be replaced while the tractor was split and some other parts that weren't listed on my original estimate that are relevant to the job... something the first dealer did not include or suggest. I am waiting for an estimate.

Independent tractor service shops (not lawn tractors) don't seem to be as plentiful and many have no reviews or years old listings. I'm a little leery of an unknown quantity but I certainly wouldn't hesitate to use an independent shop over a dealer if they came highly recommended.

I own a 990. it was used with only 75hours on it when I purchased it. I am curious to know what you finally settled on for replacing the clutch etc and what the final damage was.

Thanks

It does sound like the clutch is worn out, since it can not be adjusted.
$1744 is list price for both traction clutch and PTO clutch and covers/plates shown.
I do not know if these are routinely replaced or must be replaced.
There will be other parts needed too.
Labor hours seem about twice what I would guess.
