John Deere 955 Hydro

I have an early 955 w/hydro trans. today when mowing I lost all controls. Got back to shed and found all my hydraulic fluid on the ground. I took filter off and seems that the seal on the power shaft went out. can this be repaired without removing trany/pump?

Are you talking about where the driveshaft enters the trans? Looking at the diagram it does appear that seal could be replaced by removing the driveshaft.

First check the vent tube for a restriction. It is the curved tube under the back of the seat by the oil fill cap. Dirt dabbers will fill it and cause the trans to build excess pressure. It is 1/8" npt and just unscrews. If you have power beyond you may have to bend the tube up slightly to get it to unscrew. Careful not to break it off. Bend just enough to get clearance.

Thank you the next problem is getting the drive shaft off. Not much wiggle room. It seems that restriction would not be the issue ran 41/2 hrs. yesterday and about 2 1/2 today but I,ll check it out. Thanks

I share the vent thing cause it happened to me. Tractor kept pissing oil when I worked it hard and actually made a hissing noise through one of the seals. Vent tube was so impacted with dirt I dug on it an hour. Cleaned it out and leak and hissing went away.
