I have a 1984 JD 950 tractor with front wheel assist. I am in the process of replacing the lower oil seal (part #CH17593) in the lower left hand final drive housing of the front wheel. This seal replaced (at some point prior to machine serial no. 020000) two oil seals, the top one with open side facing up and the lower with open side facing down. The parts manual records this change but the service manual does not indicate if the open side of the replacement seal should face up or down. The service manual records a seal driver part number for both removing and replacing the seal but there is no way to get at the seal with a driver if you installed it with the open side facing down. Has anyone any experience with replacing this seal and know which way it should face?
