John Deere 870
I have a J.D. 870 tractor that I bought in the late 1980s that has about 580 hours on it. It has a 3 cylinder Yanmar diesel engine. Recently, when I checked the oil level it was significantly over the high end mark on the dipstick and smelled unusual. I drained the oil which was thinner than usual and came to about a 20% more than the stated oil capacity. I suspect that diesel is infiltrating the crankcase by some means but I don't yet know how. I had noticed recently that I would occasionally get puffs of white smoke out of the exhaust pipe but I didn't think much of it at the time. I suspect that one or more of the injectors is dribbling fuel. Is this a likely scenario or should I be looking for some other cause like a bad seal in the injection pump or other issue?
