I saw a owners manual listed on e-bay for a 80 planter unit and now there is a 71 planter on an 80 frame listed. Was this a newer version of the 70 and 71 planters? I have yet to see an actual unit.

80's have no relation to the 70/71 other than the color of paint. I believe the 80 was a later rendition of the older 44W unit planter, possibly some resemblance to the 1240 "plateless" planters. The 71 was continually updated until they were dropped from the Deere line-up in 1998. There was no further evolution of that flexplanter line.

I believe those were introduced somewhere around 1974(????) MaxEmerge II showed up in the mid to late 80's.

fwj,
thanks for the information. what is the basic differences in the jd 71 and the 7100 max-emerge?

The main difference is the location of the press wheels right next to the disks and the maxemerge planter are much heavier and therefore are a candidate for no till planting. Most of the maxemerge planters are also finger planters although some were plate planters.

The 71's were "unit planters". They're a self contained row unit, capable of operating as a single row planter, or being ganged on a toolbar to form a multiple row planter. Each row drives off of it's own press wheel.

The MaxEmerge family of planters are driven from a ground drive that powers a cross shaft that in turn powers all the rows.
